Texas and Florida State were our first choices but they both declined. But we needed 12 teams for the SECCG so we settled for Arky and SCar.

Most at that time wanted FSU and Miami to form a Super Conference. Hoping to later add Texas and OK. Some thought UT would never come unless the SEC allowed A&M to be a token member.

The original plan as I remember it was Arkansas, Texas, and A&M. Ann Richards, a Baylor grad, was the governor of Texas and she got the legislature involved in blocking the Texas schools.

The SWC hadn't officially imploded at the time. She could stop the Texas schools from leaving, but couldn't stop Arkansas.

Got that from a guy named Frank. He was kind of a big deal in Arkansas in those days.

I think FSU was who the SEC wanted most. I don't think Ark was on the radar until FSU decided it was best for them to stay in the ACC.

As a Tennessee fan a Virginia or North Carolina school were preferable. NC State and Virginia were my first choices and both would have been upgrades over a Mid West Arky team. One this time and one instead of also Mid West Mizzou.

Incorrect. SC was the fallback for FSU.

Arkansas wanted to leave the SWC years before joining the SEC.

Talks that Frank Broyles wanted Arkansas to join the Big 8.

I can’t speak for everyone but if I were to guess, we didn’t mind Arkansas and Carolina. It’s the 2012 expansion that is the controversy. We wanted a Texas team but we didn’t get the one we wanted. We wanted a team from the upper south/Midwest and we didn’t get the one we wanted.

Mizzou and Aggie fans can cry all they want. OU and Texas were preferred. If that would have killed the big12 then so be it.

Why are we crying? We got in the SEC.

If anything other SEC fans should be crying that OU and Texas told them no.

Honestly, I always thought Arkansas should have been in the SEC.

I thought FSU should have been as well, ah well, they ran away

It is now about TV Markets these days. Without those like Mizzou and Texas A&M SEC wouldn't have gotten the current contract.

The irony that LSU had any say in this.

SCe was/is the flagship U in SC

The state of SC does not have a public university system similar to Georgia.

SC-Columbia is only the flagship for the University of South Carolina colleges. Clemson has no affiliation.

Honestly I wanted major schools in the southeast to be in the SEC.

With first priority being the flagship school for each state.

I would dump Mizzou and Mississippi State

Upgrade by adding Florida State

As pitiful as Arkansad is in football, and as a state, they do add competitive value in mid/low-tier sports

Mizzou is an obvious first choice to oust. They don't fit in, they're not good at anything, they're ugly, and they put us over capacity on Tigers. The only value they bring us academic, and Georgia Tech would more than make up for that loss.

South Carolina I like on a personal level so I would vote to keep them, but at the same time they're kind of meh. It wouldn't break my heart if they were replaced with Clemson.

Mississippi State should've been dumped decades ago. Literally the only thing they have in their corner is being a charter member, which is overrated tbh. They add absolutely no value, other than being cannon fodder for the rest of the conference. They're bottom of the barrel in all aspects, across the board athletically, academically, culturally, just ugly people outside and inside. They're a Sunbelt program without that SEC patch on their uniforms

Nah.

Dooley pimped hard for SC to get in and they were an easier sell being an independent.
