Dye and Tubbs also had the advantage of coaching in a time when the NCAA was working to make things much more evenhanded across the CFB landscape. Jordan did what he did in an era of teams (notably Bama with Coach Bryant) being able to sign 100+ kids to scholarships just to keep the from playing for other teams.

FWIW, Jordan was at Auburn for nearly a decade, before Bryant came back to Tuscaloosa in 1958. What Bryant did with scholarships wasn't something that couldn't be done anywhere else.

Just an understanding, and appreciation of history, and those that came before us. Those same principles apply to other proud programs, with long histories, such as LSU.

Don't get me wrong I respect McClendon & Dietzal and what they did in their time.

I'm really ashamed at the Alabama fans, not mentioning Frank Thomas, and instead going with Wallace Wade.
No disrespect to Frank Thomas intended, but Wade put not only Alabama on the map, but also Southern football in general. Frank Thomas walked in those footsteps. Frank Thomas ranks as near as Stallings does, but I like that Stallings got Bama out of Bryant's long shadow. It's all subjective really.

No disrespect to Gene Stallings, becuase I think he is the finest person that ever coached at Alabama, but Thomas is well above him in the coaching pantheon. Thomas had a higher winning %, 3 undefeated seasons to 1.

Shug - longest tenure, MNC, most wins
Dye - dominant run in 80's
Tubbs - good run in 2000's, undefeated season

I agree with the three but I would have coach Dye above Shug. I think coach Dye put Auburn football where it is today.

2 of my 5 years at bama were shula 05-09
'05 was magical....i went to every single game that year including the cotton bowl
'06 ended early when tiffin blew the arky game
'07 ended miserable when we the west on 4th down to national champion lsu. Monroe i didnt give a damn about by that point + but losing to auburn again was awful
'08 went to every game with UGA being the most fun. sugar bowl was fun to because it was my first trip to bourbon. i was drunk as shite so the game was forgettable
'09- my graduation year and my first real championship (i BARELY remember '92) went to everygame except the BCS championship

but the shula years of my bama career were filled with ups and downs...close wins, close losses but all in all he carried us through a hell period and the fact we were on probation and enjoyed 9 games worth of a run at a national title was exciting

Is a stadium being named after someone, a street, museum, state bank, bridge, and campus building not enough to convince you?

You need a little more insight.

You MUST be joking. While I'm thinking about it I change one of my answers to Ray Goff.

I totally understand, and agree with you on both points. I was just tryign to say that while his overall record may be modest, you can't look at it and say Shug shouldn't be at the top (or in the top 2) greatest coaches AU ever had. Mainly because you can't judge his W/L % using today's climate as a gauge. It was a whole different era back then and methods for keeping teams from becoming successful were, while perfectly legal, weren't exactly "fair".

I know that Bama/Bear weren't the only ones to pull the scholarship trick, they just perfected the art form.

1) Neyland in his second run at UT- 17 Straight Shutouts(NCAA Record), last NCAA team to shutout entire season, NC, three straight SEC Titles.

2) Neyland in his first run at UT- 5 unbeaten seasons in 6 years.

3) Neyland in his third run at UT-NC in his second to last year.

But then there are the negatives....the Josh Booty saga. 1998. 1999. Losing to Ole Miss the game after beating the defending national champs. Thinking Texas players are better than Louisiana boys. You know...that kind of BS.

I actually think Dinardo was a good coach, but you forgot his biggest failing...Lou Tepper. That was his undoing.

Doc Fenton put Southern football on the map, a-hole. And Heisman put GT on the map after that.

That saw their stock rise under Saban? They never see the NFL with Shula.
