Are talking purely defensive linemen, or pass-rushing linebackers, as well?
D. Nkemdiche deserves to be in the convo in we're including LBs who get in the backfield a lot.
C.J. Johnson was good last year, but really our DL's strength was in working as a unit. No one player stood out as a sacking machine, but they racked up a TON of sacks and TFLs as a unit.
I expect R. Nkemdiche will be a force. Maybe not this year, but later. Soz...he's DQ'd for now.

it would surprise me if he played. if any freshman pash rusher is getting on the field next year for bama its probably going to be jonathan allen.
JA is great but Tim Williams is a Mingo clone with a higher motor.

Not named Clowney.
Obviously we hear about Clowney all the time, but it seems strange that their isn't another pass rusher that's a household name in the SEC entering 2013.
How would you rank the top 5 pass rushers in the SEC for 2013? Other than Clowney who is clearly #1.
1. Clowney
Other 5
2. Adrian Hubbard, Alabama
3. Jordan Jenkins, Georgia
4. Chris Smith, Arkansas
5. Ronald Powell, Florida
6. Denico Autry, Mississippi State
Post yours.
The top 8 returning players in the SEC in sacks and TFL, as far as I have been able to gather. NOT name Clowney, that is:
Name, Team: sacks, TFL, GMS/Starts
Chris Smith, AR: 9.5, 13.0, 12/12
Adrian Hubbard, UA: 7.0, 11.0, 14/13
Alvin Dupree, UK: 6.5, 12.5, 12/12
Chase Garnham, VU: 6.5, 12.5, 13/13
Trey Flowers, AR: 6.0, 13.0, 12/12
C.J. Johnson, OM: 6.5, 8.0, 13/10
Dee Ford, AU: 6.0, 6.5, 11/7
Chaz Sutton, SC: 5.0, 7.0, 13/1
Someone correct me if I left anyone out. The thing I'd point out is that while all of these were predominantly starters, Sutton was a backup. He played mostly in a specialists' role in our "Rabbit Package", against opponents in 3rd-and-long situations and clear-cut passing situations.
Chaz will now be a fulltime starter and have much more opportunities for TFLs, at least, but also I imagine we should see him have more sack ops as well as I expect most opponents to double and even triple-team Clowney as much as possible...
Other players mentioned:
Jordan Jenkins, UGA: 5.0, 8.0, 14/6
Ronald Powell, UF: N/R - injured
Denico Autry, MSU: 4.0, 9.5, 13/10
I think Arkansas fans should be excited about their DE tandem in Smith and Flowers. IMO next to Clowney/Sutton they may be the top DE tandem in the SEC this season...

1 - Clowney
... all the rest but to include Chaz Sutton at SC. He may have double digit sacks himself this year with everyone keying on Clowney.

I think it's of note that C.J. is the smallest guy in that group at 6'1" 233 lbs.
I'd love for him put on a few, but at his height I think he'd lose too much of his speed.

You know a Bulldawg is going to be on the list.
Justin Houston led the regular season in sacks 3 years ago.
Jarvis Jones led the regular season each of the last 2 years.
The scheme is suited for a guy to dominate around the edge.
Jordan Jenkins is most likely the Next Up.

Hubbard is too high.
Agree, I really wish we had a dominant pass rusher but that seems to have alluded us since Marcell and Hightower left. Hopefully one of the several DL we signed last year can provide some pressure up the middle without us having to send secondary secondary
Players up to the line.

Agreed except I don't see anyone triple teaming clowney if they do they will be asking for the qb to get hammered. Chaz ended the season with 5.5 sacks and he didn't even start a single game imo this is the next best pass rusher after clowney considering what he did in his limited appearances last season.
