Well it was 6 in 1983 for sure. I believe it went to 11 in 1986 but not 100% sure.

I was 5, but I know it was around the mid 80's.
Doesn't matter that much. Even with just the undisputed 9~10 we are well ahead of the pack.

Well, the thing about these awards, from the beginning till say the 40's, is the method of selection. TV's didn't exist for the most part, you could only listen to so many games on radio...basically a boxscore was all there was. But Coach Bryant came at the perfect time when games could be observed and an informed opinion could be made, legitimizing a selection as well as possible. His 6 in 20 years and UA's 3 afterward is well ahead of anyone else in that time, no doubt.
