Ultimately, it is all about finding a coach with the vision and ability to put the pieces together.

we have a lot of money and a good area to recruit and all but basketball has never really been big at Georgia and it has no pedigree at all and really i don't know how fan support will grow unless some coach comes in and can get georgia straight into the spot light in basketball or continually make the tournament then i doubt basketball will ever grow to more than it is. heck, i don't even know if our fans care more about baseball or basketball, seems our fan base leans more on football than others despite having good teams elsewhere

UGA's women's team is decent. I don't know why the men's team is so bad. It's not like there's a lack of basketball talent in the state of Georgia...

Blame the inability to focus on more than one thing on the gene pool IMO.

Baseball by a landslide. But hey, we suck at that too.

Tailgating at baseball games was fricking fun as shite when I was in school.

our women's team perennially is like mid teens rankings and always makes the tourney as a middle upper tier seed and then always loses like elite 8 or sweet 16. that's not bad but that's just every year so it is expected almost i would say.

our guys team just has no history and really what big time stars really want to go to UGA where they are 2nd to 3rd tier to football and maybe baseball? downtown football players are gods while the rest of the athletes kind of chase their coat tails

see i say this too but i know a lot more of my friends are more pro basketball. i feel the older generations prefer baseball and the younger prefers basketball. but yea, the recent downturn in baseball since 2008 seems to have killed off the fan base but i plan on going and getting shitty at foley for my 2nd favorite team on campus. roundball can continue to blow if perno can get us back to omaha

UGA or Bama.

Both have tons of in state talent, the money and resources to get it done. They've both shown flashes of success before. And from what it seems like, both fan bases are looking for reasons to care about basketball.

How about we answer this by asking a different question? What are the premiere basketball programs in teh country and what do they have in common?

UCLA, Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, UCONN, Syracuse, Kansas...

They are all schools where basketball is the #1 sport and student/alumni interest in basketball is not dwarfed by their interest in football etc.

Tenn and LSU have the access to talent and money but their problem is an attitude problem IMO. Basketball is never going to be better than the #2 sport at those schools. Arkansas has a great history of success in basketball (at least compared to most of the rest of the SEC) but their passion for football probably does tamp down interest in basketball.

Florida had a great run a while back under Donnovan but even at their peak football was still acknowledged as the #1 sport and I think that hurt their ability to sustain as an elite program because the recruits know football is more important.

Anyway, if you look around the SEC I think the only school outside of Kentucky that might fit the bill might be Missouri or one of the Mississippi schools and that is a maybe, not a probably.

Good analysis.

Almost looks like it might even be in Mississippi State's interest to deemphasize football.

. . . as Ole Miss has already done.

I've been saying that for a long time. I wouldn't use the term "de-emphasize", but maybe put some more resources and effort into basketball. It doesn't mean you love the football team any less. It would just be the smart thing to do from just about every single perspective.

TN does have decent potential. Nice Arena, Great Practice facility. Been relative in the past 10 years.

Bruce probably exceeded what any Vols fan could have reasonably expected.

Though the in-state talent is overrated. None of it is in East TN, and we're having to battle Kentucky and Memphis for the really elite instate talent.

Vandy. If they would devote all of their resources to becoming a major basketball school, instead of pretending that they compete in football, they could be the next Duke.

Vandy should start exclusively recruiting the smart, driven, high character athlete like Duke does and make that what they are known for. Kids like that want to play with other players like them and it will become a pipeline for those kinds of kids eventually

Vandy doesn't have Coach K. I can't see this happening without a coach of that calibur. People honestly don't give the dude enough credit, he's by far the best coach of all time. No coach wins more with less talent, although he does get a ton of talent.

Sure thing, as soon as Arkansas quits pretending they're LSU's equal in football.

Our biggest bowl win the last 4 years is the Cotton Bowl. Just like LSU

I'd say UGA, Bama, Arky, Tenn, and LSU all have the potential to be great.

I can't see Vandy doing much better than their current status quo. UF has been there recently and will always be really good.

State, OM, USCe, and Auburn are all lacking the resources or potential fan support IMO. In some cases, both.

eta: I know State is generally pretty good and sometimes really good, but I just don't think they can get to that elite level consistently.

Arkansas and Tennessee.

South Carolina also has a great arena and good fans. They should be good.

I don't know. Seems like South Carolina fans are some of the most apathetic or negative towards basketball in the SEC.
