I realize this, but the Petrino - John L Smith situation was as close as you can come to the death penalty without actually being hammered by the ncaa.

Well Kiffy actually got UT some sanctions (before he bolted 2 weeks before signing day) leading to one of the worst if not the worst hires in SEC in Derek Dooley and then kept onto him for 3 years. This led to the worst period in over 100 years of UT football. You are digging here, at the very worst the situations are about equal

I disagree from the time Petrino wrecked the bike until the time we hired Bert was over a year and a half. Probably closer to 2 years. That is 2 years that recruits would not even talk to us. We had to send coaches that knew they wouldn't be here into recruits homes that knew those coaches wouldn't be there. 2 years of zero recruiting is a bitch.

Not to mention a little rioting. There is no way in hell UT would ever hire Kiffen back. That would be the first time we see riots for hiring a coach.

WE HAD TO SEND DEREK DOOLEY INTO THEIR HOMES FOR 3 YEARS

Do you really think he'd survive a 5-7 season and missing out on any post season? Surely not.

Yes. I don't think JJ wants to try to hire a coach when the university has gone through 3 others in 7 years. Not a good look, and one he would most likely try to avoid.

Fans would be pissed, but I don't think JJ would fire him barring a colossal meltdown.

And he seemed like a good hire at the start. My point is at least you had a coach who was trying. We had a 1.5 - 2 year stretch where we didn't even know who our coach was going to be.

OK, same hypothet, except he finishes 3-9 with the victory over Bama.

If bama lost to a 3-9 Auburn team, it should be Saban getting his arse fired.

no you didn't. Petrino's accident was in April of 2012. Bielema was hired in December of 2012.

The Tennessee fans were hyping the shite out of him when he was hired.

You are correct on those dates. I had it mixed up in my head, but it was still a giant fricking mess having to send John L. into kids homes.

I don't see AU beating LSU or Bama, and I have to believe he is fired after the Iron Bowl.

They ain't beating Georgia @Sanford either

It's really not as bad as youre making it out to be

Recruiting class rankings per 247 composite:

2014( first full class of each coach)

UT 7
AR 29

2013

UT 24
AR 23

2012

UT 20
AR 28

2011

Yeah. Its tough to blame Bert's woes on just having to compete in the SEC West when he's also 2-4 against the SEC East... not to mention the fact he's lost to Rutgers, Toledo, and Texas Tech OOC.

You could argue that 3 of Bert's Eastern opponents were exceptionally strong: 2013 South Carolina (11-2), 2014 Georgia (10-3), and 2014 Missouri (11-3)... but then again, its not like Tennessee has skated by with an easy West slate.

Butch has faced some very tough competition from the SEC West: 2013 Alabama (11-2), 2013 Auburn (12-2), 2014 Alabama (12-2), 2014 Ole Miss (9-4), and 2015 Alabama (14-1).

I'd say playing in the East but also playing Alabama annually... plus catching Auburn's SEC Championship 2013 team and a very good '14 Ole Miss team pretty much cancels out the East vs. West argument.

or trying to justify it since Dooley was the only person they could get. I can assure you UT fans were not excited about Dooley

and it was a giant mess to have 3 coaches in 5 years, one of whom had the majority of his one signing class booted off the team within a year or two as well as getting UT hooked up with some probation from the NCAA

Look, I know you want to think Arkansas' situation was much worse because you experienced it, but the situation Butch stepped into was every bit as bad. I feel like his first year there were only a handful of upper classmen that played on the team

Yeah but when he finished last in the division in his 2nd year, the majority of us were done with him

Go back and watch tape. We had so many holes it was crazy. The position that we did have a player we had zero depth. It was bad.
