I wouldn't want him at AU. Not that I really want Chizik either. I'd take Saban, Miles, Richt, and Spurrier above him. Chizik, Mullen, Sumlin, Pinkel, Franklin and Muschamp would be a wash. Dooley, Freeze, Phillips and Smith would be last.

Now, hold on. Top 3 in what category?
SEC coaches that most resemble a 1920s horror movie character? #1 by far.
Coaching? No way.

No he doesn't belong in top 3. He is doing a good job with MSU though.

Not top 3 in the SEC, but definitely top 3 of who I'd want at MSU.

Yea one win over AU and they are crowing this coach as one of the tops? Please, if he beats LSU or Bama then he might be in a small chat but nothing more than that. He hasn't won a damn thing yet.

Chizik has beaten Mullen twice when two shitty teams went head to head. Mullen has beat Chizik once when a decent team went against a shitty team. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt considering where he coaches and call them a wash, along with several other ho-hum coaches.
And I'm towing the company line and taking out 2010.

It's not just that Mullen is doing more with less from a player recruiting stand point. You have to realize that State pays all it's assistants combined less than many of your other top programs pay a coordinator. Maybe this stadium expansion will bring in some more $.
I know other schools loose assistants but they don't loose a D-Coordinator after one year to someone that wants them for the same position.
He may or may not be a top three guy in the SEC but he deserves some recognition for what he is doing.

Where does Dan Mullen rank among other SEC Head Coaches?
Are we measuring by height? Weight? Penis length?

We lost a D Coordinator twice to the same position in a couple years.

Was that due to money or...? Our guy left to quadruple his salary. Tough to compete to keep the talent at coaching when you can't pay.

A top three guy would intimate that he is above a Spurrier or Richt which I think is ridiculous at this point. He's a good coach, but good only gets you so far in this league. And that isn't competing for Atlanta, which makes you top 3 material. Upper half along with others? Yes, but not top 3 like the OP suggested.

They paid a shitload more than we would.

We pay our assistants less because they are generally less proven. We can afford to pay them to keep them, and you will see that after this season with Chris Wilson. The days of MSU as a "poor school" are over, and have been since Greg Byrne/Dan Mullen arrived. We made $6mil profit in the athletics dept last year without using one cent from the Bulldog Club. That Club brought forth another $33 million for a total AD profit of nearly $40 million.

We didn't lose Manny Diaz because of money. We lost Manny Diaz because it was Texas calling. How many have parlayed a coordinator job into a premiere head coaching job at Texas compared to MSU?
As of today, Diaz is ranked as the #1 or #2 coordinator in the country for a HC gig, just like Muschamp was before him. That is something he never could have accomplished at State regardless of what we paid him.

He hasnt done anything.. MSU hasnt competed for a Division title yet..He could very well end up losing to UTk, Arky, Bama, Ole Miss, LSU, TAMU. I would reserve judging him in the top 8 until he is consistent with MSU; and by that I mean competing for division titles. I dont get why a fan base would be so rabid of barely being bowl eligible..
But so far this season this may be the year for Mullenz and co.

Muschamp was our defensive coordinator when he left for Texas.

Agreed. I loved Manny, but I can't blame him for leaving for Texas. Hope he does well.

Compare coaching payrolls. I just thought it was good point to make. That is all.
