Just want him to be best coach MSU ever kept for thirty years

Mullen has definitely done more with less and I think he is a good coach. His problem is recruiting potential at MSU. Coaches are measured by championships; win your division, win the SEC and then win the NC. I'm not convinced that Mullen can do any of those things at MSU in the West division of the SEC. MSU is setup with a home schedule that might yield a 10 win season but they will finish at best 3rd in the West after losing to Bama and LSU. Mullen will be at a crossroads at some point in his career. He will either accept mediocrity at MSU or move on to another coaching gig with more potential. Spurrier, Richt, Saban and Miles have all been fortunate to be at schools with fertile recruiting potential.

I have Spurrier at the #2 Rank.
How about furnishing your entire list for us?
Either way, PYA for suggesting Saban or Miles < Mullen.

Not sure about below Richt. Richt at a place any decent coach should be able to compete yet he can't. Spurrier at a school no one can win at. Mullen 4 behind Stevie. Come on Muschamp, time to step up.

I actually posed the question to you but If you want my opinion then no I would not put him into the top 3.
I would say top 5 though for sure.

Because he beats a shitty AU team hes top 3 coach in the league?
I think some people are placing him ahead of Chizik that had him below in the past.

I would put him at about five, but i wouldn't want richt. I can't see him being that successful in starkville and the ole ball coach is old. We aren't getting miles or Saban, so merlins is perfect.

Yep. Mullen is alright, but Jackie Sherril is still the best coach Miss State has ever had. Mully has some work to do.

Jackie Sherrill recruited at an elite level to MSU, even after we started losing. Just so happens this was around the beginning of the recruiting databases, so there isn't much data showing it. Check out his 02 and 03 classes on Scout/Rivals. He proved it to be possible...
IMO Mullen stays until he feels like he can't continue to take steps forward. Thusfar, it is a long way from stagnating IMO. His recruiting is getting consistently better and better. As long as JUCO programs like EMCC and MGCCC stay strong, State will always have a chance...

His best team was 9 wins, but you're going to ask if he deserves top 3 over coaches who have won a NC? Lol

Miss State was also JUCO central while Jackie was there. Which is another reason why they were so good and ultimately led to their demise.

I wasn't watching State back in the day but I would be interested to see how tough the SEC west was compared to today's standard.

All I know is that Jackie got Miss State to Atlanta.

I'm aware of how Jackie failed on the JUCOs at the end. Jackie DEPENDED on juco guys yearly without developing the highschool talent behind them. That approach is feast or famine and unsustainable with just a few busts. Mullen has been using them as a stop gap to get the highschool talent ready. We are to the point now depth wise that we can afford to only go after elite JUCO players.
The MS juco system is a tremendous resource to us when used correctly. It's one of the only such advantages that we have in MS. Currently, we are actively recruiting 3 total JUCO players...all elite talents. According to 24/7 composite:
Jonathan Rumph(#9 overall JUCO, #2 WR)
Justin Cox(#14 overall JUCO, #1 DB)
Za'Darius Smith(#11 overall JUCO, #1 DE)

Sherrill also never developed a player. That was always my major issue with him. He got talent and they accomished nothing. Most got progressively worse the longer they were there. The game passed him by. Coaches now are all about developing talent. Saban does it. Miles does it. Mullen does it too. Just not to degree that the other two do because he doesn't have 5* talent falling in his lap.

Until yesterday, his only SEC west wins were against Ole Miss. Hell, who hasn't beaten Ole Miss?
Not many other teams have beaten those other teams in the West either. He has done pretty well against the East.
Irregardless, I wouldn't say top 3, but maybe top 5. He is doing pretty well with the talent pool he has available. The main thing he is lacking is a signature win.
