Maybe west Virginia, holgerson(sp) are just good at the passing game

its so painfully obvious Nicky was bitching about HUNH and wanting it slowed down b/c he has no earthly idea how to defend it.

They had a great gameplan. Which is worrisome because they knew exactly what Bama would do on D. I saw absolutely no difference in the approach on defense against WVU as I did against AU or Oklahoma. No adaptation at all.

Anybody who says DBs are Nick Saban's specialty are fooling themselves. Even Nick's best corners and safeties compared to the rest of his defenses have been subpar outside of Mark Barron and Demarcus Milliner.

His linebackers have been otherworldly however and it shows in his past teams. Ro, Dont'a, Courtney, Mosley, Reamer, Harris, Anders...........so many.

Agree 100%. I have always thought bama's DB play is overrated by the media. The LB play has masked deficiencies of the D in the past.

b/c sports media is a bunch of dumb arse lazy shite heals who parrot whatever the guy next to them says instead of learning about what the hell they are watching.

for example, in the 3rd year of Avery Johnson coaching the Mavs there were still several talking heads on ESPN who were calling them a fast paced, wide open, fast break offense when in reality under AJ they were one of the slowest most plodding half court teams in the league.

Has routinely held HUNH teams well below their averages with a couple of exceptions. He may struggle relatively against it, but not really any more so than most other coaches.

Defense wasn't great by any means, but they did manage to hold WVU to one offensive TD.

It had A LOT to do with our signal callers not doing a good job. We were out of position so much. It was kind of ridiculous.

A lot of it also had to do with Trickett and his WRs making some incredible plays.

It is what it is. I expect us to get better, but we shall see.

This is what really shocked me. They ran the same ol' same ol' that Saban has built his coaching foundation around. He refuses to change. I thought surely after the issues with A&M and OU that this offseason would be where Saban and Smart would come out with a slightly different approach. But it seems like the same shite he was running at LSU and Michigan St.

Trying to change the defense pre-snap based on the look the offense is giving you? Are you kidding?

I'd be pretty happy if we held other passing teams to 16 offensive points and 3 stalled drives in a row to end the game.

Without our best linebacker.

With Sylve in the game.

look for ole miss and a&m to put up big yards through the air vs bama

not saying that both of those teams will beat bama, but they will throw all over them.

Yep. The key to bearing Bama is slowing down that offense

You do realize that there are passes that can't be defended against right?

Saban was the secondary coach with the Houston Oilers before he was DC with the Browns. The Oilers led the league in ints.

Yep

It's points that matter, not yards.

In 2011, WV passed for over 400 yards on LSU but lost by 26. When all you do is pass, you're going to get yards.

Pretty much - lost in all the griping and fear mongering is that Alabama held WVU to 28 yards on the ground in 24 attempts and only converted 35% on third down.

It's the doom and gloomers, and the rivals feeding off of them. We had an offense that ran 82 plays, gained 530 yards; only punted twice, and we have a kicker that looked like he could've hit FGs from over 50 yards out. We get our senior LB back this weekend, and the better corner to Sylve (who wasn't bad, but his technique - locked onto the WR - meant he couldn't time making a play on the ball. That's fixable.)

Our defense will be fine. People talking about how "bad" our defense was are cherry picking.

Determining who's best after the first game is absurd. By that logic, AU last year was the, what? 8th best team in the conference? We all know that's crap.
