He played both TE and SE at Bama, but lined up more often at TE since he was such a good blocker and Bama ran the wishbone. Newsome was named SEC Lineman of the Year by the Birmingham Quarterback Club and the Atlanta Touchdown Club in '77, an award he wouldn't have won if he was considered more as a SE.
