I've seen it a few times in this thread. LSU's OL was ranked at the top last year and is going to be better this year imo. We return both tackles, All-SEC and 3 year start Will Clapp slides over to center, and Maea Teuhema returns to guard. Teuhema didn't start last year which baffled fans since he was a freshman All-American.
The only real new piece to this group is redshirt junior Garrett Brumfield.

Etling is a smart kid and makes good decisions, but he has a rag arm.

You said he can't throw into tight windows. That's not his problem.

He struggles making NFL throws and to win a national title you better have that or have an abundance of elite skill to make up for it other places.

You added that so no one would use Hurts as a follow up didn't you?

LSU had a solid run blocking OL last year. They had an average at best pass blocking group. Pretty much everyone agrees with that. And, there are no apparent tackles to improve that this year.

For last year that was absolutely the case.

However, Hurts also had that whole running thing that Etling doesn't have. Kind of a gigantic difference.

He can't throw into tight windows against elite secondaries, no. And that is a problem.

Again, we're strictly talking national titles here, not winning 10 or 11 games. I don't think Danny Etling can beat elite teams with throws into tight spaces or lengthening the field.

That isn't a slight. I've said 3 times LSU can have a really really good season, I just don't think they can win 3 straight against elite defenses and win a national title.

Man you are really going out on a limb here seeing that only one team per year will do this.

It's literally the topic of the thread, so, I think it's relevant. The question isn't who can be pretty good, the question is who has the best chance of winning the title.

I think the only 2 SEC teams with a chance are Alabama and Auburn due to the reasons I've stated in this thread. The other schools have weaknesses that I don't think can be strengthened enough to win, while Auburn has a higher ceiling due to their QB.

Here is an anonymous thought on Etling from another of the head coaches in the SEC...

"I still question the quarterback deal. Danny Etling doesn’t have much upside. He’s just OK."

Some truth to that, but he played good enough to beat everyone but Bama last year. Florida loss was not due to his play it was not great but he put us in position to win that game multiple times. That said I think Canada's offense fits him better then what we did last year but you gotta play the game to tell.
