What do you all think about UGA's coaching situation?

Since December 2009, I have been on record advocating that Mark Richt’s time at Georgia should expire – and I carry many a red & black arrow still stuck in my back as a result.

A good coach and an even better man, it was apparent then that Richt’s laissez-faire coaching style had long since worn out its welcome between the hedges. His “relaxed” approach, an undisciplined one, that since the middle of the last decade has commonly resulted in more discipline issues and recruits leaving Athens than most – if not all – of his SEC opponents.

These losses have served as the backbone of a program that has failed to win a signature SEC game since 2007. But it’s far worse than that – Georgia’s hardly even been competitive in these vital games.

For my regular readers, I beg your indulgence one final time…after nearly three years of pointing out what has to me been obvious, this will be my last time on the subject. The writing has been on the wall since the 2009 season, and it’s getting clearer with each passing year.

2008 began with great promise as a consensus preseason #1, but ended with loses to all three regular season top 25 opponents the Dawgs faced, surrendering 135 points in the process, along with their pride.

2009, again, no signature SEC wins. 2010 was even worse.

Last season, UGA fans were gathering pitchforks and fire after Georgia started 0-2, even though those two defeats came against teams that were actually better than UGA. Then, as expected, the inevitable festival commenced once Georgia ran through its soft schedule…though again with no signature SEC wins and 0-4 against the better teams on their schedule

Before that season, I once again laid out the argument against Richt – and the nod to Joe Paterno aside, the points are still the same…still valid in October 2012.

I have been suspicious of the Gamecocks’ 2012 secondary and Connor Shaw’s arm strength. For those reasons, I picked UGA to win in Columbia…on the misplaced belief that Aaron Murray’s ability to victimize the Gamecocks secondary would trump Richt’s penchant for losing big SEC games.

That mistake is stinging my professional pride, but degrees of magnitude less than it should any UGA fan who still dreams of hoisting the SEC championship trophy one day soon.

Even after its lowest offensive output since 2006, Georgia could still back its way into a trip to the SEC championship game just like last year. SC is already a three point dog to LSU in Baton Rouge next Saturday (itself a bit surprising), after which the Gamecocks travel straight to the Swamp for a date with the Gators.

The Bulldogs have just one tough game left on their particularly easy schedule – that neutral field contest against Florida, which the Gators must play the week after tussling with Carolina.

Under Mark Richt, that is what Georgia football has become: backing into honors.

At the risk of multi-year redundancy… Georgia is one of our conference’s richest athletic departments, both in terms of revenue and brand awareness. Its football team is a crown jewel of not just the SEC, but college football in general. It deserves better than mediocrity.

Unless the Dawgs make it to Atlanta, this upcoming game in Jacksonville will be its last chance for a signature SEC win in 2012. It will probably be Mark Richt’s final chance too.

For if Georgia fails to beat Florida, it will mark their fifth consecutive year without a key SEC win.

UGA is second only to LSU in wins over the last decade. UGA has the most 10+ win seasons during the same time span.

Yet. ZERO TITLE SHOT!

Mark Richt is the longest tenured coach in the league. IMHO, if you don't bring home the Crystal Football, at this day in age, with all UGA has, it's time to retire, or GTFO.

Thoughts on CMR??

A question that has to be asked also is: IF not CMR then who? A proven guy is rare and hard to get. All the other options, ultimately, is a crapshoot.

Actually read, and saw this. Promptly fapped zealously, owing to a dismal CFB weekend.

He's won SEC titles, never had an awful year, and consistently pumps out 8-11 win seasons. You can't ask for any better.

I know you'd like a coach that would turn you into a title contender almost every year, but look around. Who does that besides Saban? No one. There are no other Nick Sabans. They don't exist.

There's no upgrade from Richt. You are far more likely to fall into a slump much worse than you'd imagined if you fire him. He won the East last year. He'll win it again. No trolling, if you understand what's best, you'll keep him.

Being unbias, i would say let the season play out. When ya'll play UF atleast. See how your feeling that Sunday. Just vent for the time being. It is hard to say fire a guy when you have only lost one game. Yeah it was a big loss but we played out of our minds @ home with a record crowd. We also have one hell of a talented team.

like I said just vent and see where yall are after the UF game.

Richt is a good guy, he's the type of guy that you want to pull for and hope he does well.

That being said his teams constantly underachieve, he doesn;t have the kill mentality that is needed to be a championship coach, but not many do really. It's rare that you find a coach as dedicated as Saban who's willing to skullfrick his own brothers eye socket to get a W.When you find a coach like that you hang onto them as long as possible.

That being said though, Richt can continue to win 9 to 10 games a year most years imo, but he I cant see him ever winning a championship. If I were a Georgia fan I'd want him gone.

If uga had a defense with stafford and moreno you'd have a title. Since then imo uga just hasn't been good. People see #5 vs #6 and they expect that uga is a title contender... But was that ranking really earned? Cakewalk schedule and they lost all 4 games against ranked teams last year. Give it one more year because murray will have to come back (he is too short) and if uga doesn't get it done with a senior murray and gurly/marshall as sophs then look to make a change.

Response to everyone.

This is the SEC, we are ALL expected to compete for Titles in this league. After all the success over the last several years in our OOC games/Title games, it only makes sense.

CMR is the longest tenured coach in the SEC and has yet to prove he can prepare UGA and push them over the top. God is great and all, but he won't win titles for the Dawgs, lol.

We have more money than most and can afford to pay any coach in the world whatever they choose. Why settle for being the laughing stock of the league?? We are slowly becoming the Atlanta Braves. I am used to them letting Atlanta down. However, UGA deserves more...

You have to be passionate and show emotion to win at this level. CMR does neither. Petrino had my vote for giving a shite. However, he let his dick lead him (don't we all) in to trouble.

Come on, dude. Too soon to talk about the Braves? I've lived in Atlanta my whole life. The Braves choke every year, and have for over 20 years. Period.

Georgia has top 5 high school talent. Problem is, without God, we wouldn't get a lot of the recruits. I get CMR can recruit with the best of them because of Jesus and being in Georgia, but we still lose top recruits to Saban and Spurrier.

Someone needs to come in and shake things up. We need passion in our program.

CBP has passion. Only thing is, he quit on the Falcons. Bad taste in my mouth.
