I keep hearing JFF, Freeze, Malzahn, Baylor, Oregon are "gimmicky".

They seem to be winning a good bit so I guess "gimmicky" is at least getting results for some teams.

Two coaches that come to mind are Nutt and Tuberville. Those were some gimmick offense.

You Might Have a Gimmick Offense!

If your qb has more rushing yards than your running back, you might have a gimmick offense.

If your receivers have 20 catches for 51 yards, you might have a gimmick offense.

If your tight end has only seen the field twice in the last month, you might have a gimmick offense.

If you and your opponent put up 90 or more points in a game, you and they might have a gimmick offense.

If you scored less than 20 points against a team with a pulse on defense, you might have a gimmick offense.

If your principal play is the end read, you might have a gimmick offense.

If you line up in spread formation even when you are inside the 5 yard line, you might have a gimmick offense.

If your sidelines are holding up pictures of burritos, hashtags, a Shell gas logo, and the Michelin Man to call in plays, you might have a gimmick offense.

etc...etc...etc...

Defining threads as response threads or not a response thread has become so important to you. What exactly is that about? It is a common occurrence on message boards. Please keep bookmarking as they will all be deleted by end of the 3rd qtr of tonights game. You can start bookmarking on Monday for your next Saturday matchup.

The only threads you will see bumped are the ones where you and your fellow fans have posted foolishly.

We had a new O coordinator every other year under Tubs. Exactly which one was gimmicky? There was nothing gimmicky about the Tubershell or NallsMinger. Must be thinking of the Tony Franklin experiment.

dumbest, most gimmicky O I've seen this year was Stanford v U Washington (I think)... that Washington offense was the biggest bag o' chyt I've ever seen. Like watching a boxer run away from the opponent all night long.

I agree with most of this but most don't apply to Auburn.
Our qb has only been our leading rusher once.

Slammie Coates is our leading wr and leads the nation in yds/rec.

Brandon Fulse, Prosch and CJ play a lot.

49+42=91

hasn't happened

disagree the zone read has been around for a while and lots of teams run it.

We line up with 4 in the backfield and run between the tackles the majority of the time inside the 5.

5. Maybe it's just called a "gimmick" when the other team does it.

Or the other team can't stop it...

This play Gus pulled on Auburn while the offensive coordinator at Arkansas would be considered gimmicky.

No fullback in your base packages constitutes a gimmick offense.

I will use the old Auburn as an example - Bo Jackson would see someone in the way and run straight through them or carry them into the endzone with him. Because he was MAN - Pat Dye coached boys to be Men not pussyfoot around with gimicks

I want to bump this genius post following our victory over Arkansas tonight using the same running play over and over again.

If the offense is incapable of working in the NFL, it's a gimmicky offense. See Chip Kelly with the Eagles.

You probably get off to that clip. Anyways congrats on the loss. Too bad all Bret's gimmicks still couldn't get him a win over a HS coach.

I am probably going to get slammed by several different groups but I think I know what the OP is referring to. People like to use the term gimmick when talking about Gus Malzahn's offense. When he was at Springdale he developed his offense. While it would take awhile to describe the Malzahn offense in general it is a spread offense but one that evolved from Malzahn's roots in the Wing T. Don't get me wrong Malzahn has a good solid offensive system with sound smart football principles backing it up. A lot of this has to do with the fact by the time he was hired at Arkansas by Houston Nutt in 2006 he was killing people with his offense at Springdale High. His offense at Springdale was a multiple system that employed some spread concepts and some Wing T concepts. At the time Malzahn was most famous for his appearance at several coaching clinics throughout the Southeast for several of his misdirection plays.

As an old Wing T coach at heart, even tonight watching AU I still see the principles. Auburn runs a different type of offense than anything that could be described as Wing T but I see the Buck, Belly, and Counter look of his Run Game. Malzahn since he has been in College has employed more of a "traditional" shotgun Zone read/option offense for his run game though he does run Invert Veer, some counters, and a belly play where he pulls guards (almost unheard of in say Meyer or Rich Rodriquez Shotgun option offenses)

When Malzahn was first hired by Houston Nutt, after the obvious articles that were written concerning the fact he was hired to keep the Springdale kids in state, the next articles were written about what Malzahn was famous for at the time on offense his misdirections. That is where he got labeled the gimmick coach. Any coaching running the Wing T has reverses in their offense. In high school we had at least 9 (one off of each of base run plays and the 9th was a double reverse). We even had fake the reverse run the play normal type plays. That is not trickery or gimmicks that is the core of Wing T ball.

So when Malzahn got to Arkansas he installed a good chunk of his offense. About halfway through the season though (which came ironically after a win against Bama (their last one) for them thanks Tiffin) Malzahn had his playcalling duties taken away. Granted while his offense has been shown to be successful the play calling was mostly taken away because he was running reverses with freshman instead of focusing on the fact he had Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, Peyton Hillis in the same backfield.

He then left to go to Tulsa then came back to Auburn where he, a veteran offensive line and some wimpy kid named Cam won the national title.

Malzahn is a great coach and has only gotten better. He was the real reason behind the 2010 national title. I mean he made the 2009 Auburn team competitive while having Chris Todd as the QB. While yes a good deal of his offense makes you play sideline to sideline it also makes you play disciplined without cheating.

Malzahn is a great coach and is likely the SEC coach of the year. (Though if you go Assistant I think that one is Cristobal). I plan to go to AU's coaching clinic as long as Malzahn is there. He will keep Auburn competitive as long as he is the coach at Auburn.
