based on your criteria, the below sec cities are eliminated:
athens (about 1 hr from atlanta)
baton rouge (state capital)
tuscaloosa (<1 hr from birmingham)
auburn (<1 hr from montgomery)
gainesville (about 1 hr from jacksonville)
columbia, sc (state capital, military)
columbia, mo (30 min from state capital)
nashville (state capital, major city)
lexington (300k city population)

- i'm sure there are folks driving houston-college station and oxford-memphis in about an hour.
- if waco isn't a college town, then neither is knoxville.

that leaves us with starkville and fayetteville as the only true college towns in the sec. congrats msu! you made the top top in something!

based on your criteria, these non-sec cities are also not college towns:

acc
chapel hill (<1 hr from raleigh; durham suburb?)
durham (mid-major city)
winston-salem (mid-major city)
charlottesville (<1 hr from richmond; jag school)
chestnut hill (boston suburb, hanscom afb nearby)

big 10
ann arbor (<1 hr from detroit)
bloomington (<1 hr from indy)
west lafayette (about 1 hr from indy)
new brunswick (nyc suburb)

big 12
lubbock (mid-major city)
norman (okc suburb; tinker afb nearby)
stillwater (about 1 hr from okc)

pac 12
tempe (phoenix suburb)
tucson (500k city population)
boulder (<1 hr from denver)

questionable - waco, syracuse, south bend

btw, st paul is the capital of minnesota although minneapolis is obviously not a college town.

Baton Rouge wasn't always the state Capitol. LSU made it a state capitol. College city.

College Station is 1 hr. 30 minutes from the Houston city limits unless you're going 120.

You consider Montgomery, Alabama a major city?

I mean I don't really consider Birmingham one for that matter

A J Foyt lives in Hockley and keeps his jet in Brenham. He couldn't drive from Houston to College Station in an hour.

Figures a sip would fail to read all the criteria. Read all again after the word "commerce"

There's also this thing called the Mississippi River.

this thread is so dumb.

College Station sucks.

Happy to see Tuscaloosa is getting more respect.

Auburn is mostly shitty.

Athens is the best.

Columbia sc is not so bad.

I want to go visit Fayettville, heard good things.

Surprised Gainsville sucks so much.

Knoxville is in a pretty area of the country.

Oxford is very quaint and nice, but maybe a little too tiny for me.

Baton ROuge is a city. out of all the SEC towns, it reminds me of Houston the most. Not too bad overall though. the plans to improve the area between downtown and campus looks very legit.

It is almost as if this "no state capitals" rule has something to do with a certain hipster-heavy city in Texas....hmmm....what could be the history here.....

Nope. Austin is more of a "college town" than say Columbus, OH, but neither are "college towns".

Baton Rouge is more of a college town than Austin or Nashville...but is still a state capital.

I agree Austin isn't a "college town" and hasn't really been viewed that way since the mid 1990s. I'm just frickin with ya. Pressing that burnt-orange button.
