If the College or University is the primary reason for the city's existence, then it's a college town.

State Capitals are not college towns
Major cities are not college towns (Major cities of commerce whose identity isn't tied to the school or cities which have professional sports teams).
Suburbs of major cities (within 1 hour of a major city whose existence is not tied to the school) are not college towns.
Cities with large military bases are not college towns.

Nothing against LSU, but the primary reason that the city of Baton Rouge exists is the Louisiana State Government.

No. Even if you eliminate the state capitals, we'd still be 8th out of 11 college towns in the SEC...which I can't really disagree with.

Another example: Manhattan, KS (Kansas State)

Not a college town.

The reason? FORT RILEY

The same Government that's trying to screw LSU by cutting funding.

This isn't a topic about how messed up and corrupt the state government of Louisiana is. It's about what qualifies as a "college town".

Would the SEC school locations exist without the schools themselves?

Fayetteville, AR (not sure. probably not)
Tuscaloosa, AL (not sure. probably not)
Auburn, AL (NO)
Gainesville, FL (not sure. probably not)
Athens, GA (NO)
Lexington, KY (NO)
Baton Rouge, LA (YES - State Capital)
Columbia, MO (NO)
Oxford, MS (NO)
Starkville, MS (NO)
Columbia, SC (YES - State Capital + Ft. Jackson)
Knoxville, TN (probably not)
College Station, TX (NO)
Nashville, TN (YES - State Capital + Major City)

Meh, they're screwing every school. Most funds are protected by the state constitution. The only things they can cut are healthcare and education.

Is that why you started this thread? Because we were ranked higher in the rankings?

Tuscaloosa existed and was the capital of the state before the University existed. Would it be the same as it is now? No, but it was already a key trading area because of the cotton trade and it's location on a main river before the University was started in 1831.

That would disqualify Knoxville based on population and would really be an inaccurate description. Knoxville pretty much revolves around the university and is absolutely financially dependent on it. UT was established in 1794 prior to Tennessee becoming a state. It has been here since 1794 and has absolutely shaped Knoxville's character. Remove UT and Knoxville loses what identity it has.

Is 221 years in a place and shaping what would become an a state as well as several state, national and other leaders who shaped the nakeup of the state as well the US as a whole not enough influence?

Yea, I was actually about to post that while Knoxville is a bigger city the idea of a Knoxville without Tennessee is a totally different discussion than Nashville without Vanderbilt. It is much more like Alabama and Tuscaloosa than Nashville and Vandy.

I didn't know Knoxville was that big. Would changing the figure to 500,000 help?

Not really. LSU's campus is probably nicer than A&M's.

Doesn't take away from the fact that State Capitals are not college towns.

I am an avid Vawl hater but Knoxville is actually a pretty cool city. They have really made the downtown nice, between Old City and the theatre scene (Tennessee Theatre is great), the city seems like it would be a pretty decent place to live (if you could stand all the orange, I could not).
