The city itself, not the metro area.

Tuscaloosa existed and was the capital of the state before the University existed. Would it be the same as it is now? No, but it was already a key trading area because of the cotton trade and it's location on a main river before the University was started in 1831.

Selma, Alabama was considered the Queen off the Blackbelt. Selma sits in Dallas county and leading up to the Civil War it was amongst the top 5 riches counties in America with a population of close to 25,000. You couldn't find a more pleasant and cultured place to live. Selma 150 years ago is not the same Selma that we know. Tuscaloosa would be Dothan light or Demopolis heavy if it weren't for the University of Alabama. Let's not get things bent.

Who gives a shite? So a "college town" is pretty much a place with little to offer other than the University. That's not a good thing.

so it's kinda like factory towns or company towns. everything in the town is based on the one entity. what a concept.

Well no shite, the city is a lot older than the college.

I have no problem admitting that Baton Rouge is not a college town. BR =/= LSU

Another example: Manhattan, KS (Kansas State)

Not a college town.

The reason? FORT RILEY

Was stationed there. While Manhattan was the place where I normally went to have fun and such on the weekends, it is not a city that is actually connected to the base, nor does it need the base.

Junction City on the other hand is tied to the base and does need the base to survive.

Everything in Manhattan is tied to K-State, not the base.

College station is a shithole. Went 2 years back. Won't be going again.

If college station folk would quit spending all their dough on Shiite franchise food, and develop a palate.....it would rank higher.

Suburbs of major cities (within 1 hour of a major city whose existence is not tied to the school) are not college towns.

Athens is within 1 hour of the major city of Atlanta, whose existence is not tied to the University of Georgia.

Under your definition then, Athens is not a college town. Which is insane.

Just thought I should point that out.

Nothing against tamu, but the primary reason for College Station's existence is that there are a lot of people in Texas not smart or rich enough to attend UT.

I'm still waiting to beat your teeth out at the Ikea parking lot in Frisco. Just drive there, for all of sake?

The study released today (PDF) used data from more than 3 million people in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 75 who had played several Lumosity brain-training games

So your trump card is a study based on Luminosity games? Nice. I didn't think I could respect tamu any less, but you brought your university and everyone else associated with it to a whole new low. Congrats!

For that response to work you'd have to ignore the fact that A&M began in 1876, 7 years before t.u. did.

So you didn't read the "whose existence isn't tied directly to the school" part.
