Very true. I would even say squeaking out a win against a (much underrated) team will do wonders for the team. Nobody will care about this game in december, since yall won.
Honestly, this team needed a wake up call, and they got it. They drank their own Kool-aid, and played like shite across the board.
If you're gonna have a total shite show game, better to have it early and squeak out a win.
Here is what I took from last night's game.
1) Tennessee's offensive line is not good.
2) Tennessee's offensive coordinator is a fricking idiot.
3) Josh Dobb's makes terrible decisions with the football.
4) Appy State is a good football team and would finish 4th in the east imo.
5) Butch Jones is a snake oil salesman and should be put in jail for the failure of a coach he is.
Well, if bad coaching were punishable with jail time, I know some other coaches who would be executed by lethal injection.
Dobbs is not a consistent, championship caliber QB. I've said that from the very beginning and got argument from some UT fans. He's most dangerous to UT when he brings his arm back to pass.
CBJ is not a championship caliber HC. Talks a good game, and I believe is a good man, but doesn't have the IQ to get UT there.
App St. has some good and experienced players. But they couldn't consistently win in the SEC with ** players. They played hard and should have come out with a win.
I believe what UT has is an experienced roster of decent players, but not a cohesive football team.
JMHO.

You could be right, but I think that's hard to tell quite yet. Plenty of teams have struggled in openers and gone on to have good to great seasons.

Ohio St did it a couple years ago after losing their opener to a pretty bad VT team.
Edit: it was actually their second game of the season but still.

Reminiscent of the Auburn Jacksonville state game last year.
Which was a pretty good barometer of how crappy we ended up being. This will likely be the same for UT.
The good thing for them is the rest of the East is terrible as well so they could still end up with a decent season record wise.

I agree with all but gotta also state Hurd is overrated. Defense will carry this team but only so far.

I don't know what you expect Hurd to do with the shite show line performance last night.

Miami lost to Florida in 1983
Florida cheated.
"Alumni or friends were named in 36 of the original 107 violations cited by the NCAA, with one booster, Dan Douglas of Ft. Lauderdale, named in 10. Douglas was among seven men to whom the university sent letters asking them to disassociate themselves from any participation in the athletic program.
But Florida`s rules violations did not even include any of the academic improprieties revealed in the testimony of former academic coordinator Mike Brown, who also was used as a spy at opponents` practices, or in the lengthy investigation by the St. Petersburg Times. Brown alleged that half of Florida`s 28 recruits in 1981 could neither read nor write; the newspaper claimed that the 1981 team had 46 players below minimum entrance requirements, many of whom stayed eligible through courses like advanced power volleyball."

I have actually felt euphoric all day. We won. All the game yesterday shows was the silliness of preseason hype.
I could segue onto the real motives people have for blasting fans on a message board for the hype by a media over which those fans have no control.
But people know that. They can examine their own motives.
We got a couple of breaks in the game of a type that didn't go our way last year.
We also had some bone-headed crap like Sutton fumbling their punt (after the UT D forced a 3 and out) and of course Reeves-Mabin targeting that one player - whose knee was down. He -should- have been ejected.
When your best players screw up, it isn't the coaching.
I hope we have FIFTEEN embarrassments like that.
We'll be undefeated national champions. Again.

That is true.
I just got back and have seen no analysis.
App St. didn't score in the second half. That may have functions of better Defense even with no Reeves-Mabin or maybe App St. wearing down some.
I will just add that we had a knot of App. St. fans, maybe 25, down to our right front. They had some reason to cheer and did no. So far as I know, none of the Vol fans said anything to them or harassed them in any way.

There's no signature feature like that appears at the bottom of an email, so after every single post you physically type your name and graduation year. Why do you do that?

What happened to Preston Williams. He had 5 catches early and then nothing. Was he injured? I saw him line up in the 4th, but he could have been hobbling.

I think it showed a bit more than that.
It showed your DL got gashed up the middle.
It showed you OL couldn't block. (APP St. got more yardage in exactly the same number of carries)
It showed Dobbs can make questionable decisions when under duress.
It showed when Tennessee gets behind they don't panic.
It showed that Dobbs gives it his all when trying to go into the end zone.
It showed Tennessee has a lot of work to do.
It showed that if Tennessee takes anyone lightly, they can be beaten by that team.
I was shocked most at the DL play. Those guys have GOT to play up to their potential, or Tennessee could be in trouble.

Dude. If you think the hype was just in the media, then you were not here all summer. granted, some of the Tennessee fans were cautiously optimistic, but some were over the top.

I understood why the refs called it, but there really was no way he could have avoided it. Maybe a good call...but in so many ways a little common sense by the referees, and he would have stayed in the game.

Nope. If you play like that 2 or 3 times you won't be National Champions.

No we just stopped passing the ball.

This is why I hate targeting. According to the rule definition, this was textbook. But how does he avoid that? And he clearly wasn't intentionally trying to hurt the guy, he turned his head to the side before he hit the guy. He should've called a fair catch.

Oh no. They'll get embarrassed many more times through December.
