No excuses means no excuses. Anything less than 10 wins next year will have been a less than satisfactory job done by Butch. Only exception would be if and only if Dobbs is lost with an injury early in the season. Then the floor might be 9-3. But a new DC is no excuse.

Eh. He was great at Texas and Auburn as a coordinator, but that was a long time ago. North Carolina was pretty below average this year in total. I don't really see how trading Jancek for Chizik would be much of a gain.

I understand if there is an upgrade in place, but kinda shitty to can a guy whose defense has been the best part of the team the past 2 years while you (Butch Jones) get a raise even though you don't know how to coach your team to be aggressive in the 2nd half of games you have won. Looking at their losses, giving up that many points to Florida is the only one that looks bad on the defense and that's at least when they had Will Grier.

I will tell you this, that Tennessee defense I saw come into Bryant Denny didn't make every play, but they made almost every tackle and they competed their arse off. They played as hard as anybody I saw all season.

That's very true. It's also true that the Tennessee defense was sliced and diced on the final drive of the game just like Oklahoma and Florida

Yep. I wouldn't have any problem with this as a Tennessee person. Like with Georgia firing Richt, your coach/AD is making a move because he wants to win a championship. They aren't satisfied with the current "pretty good" setup. It might blow up, but at least the guy wants to win the ultimate prize and not just settle.

If they get Shoop, I think it's definitely an upgrade, but I think it's really bad timing to be breaking in a new defensive coordinator when next year is supposed to be "the year" for the Vols.
Next year is their best chance to win big. After that they'll be losing a lot of talent and it'll be back to the "young" excuses for Butch.
