I'm really not sure why people put so much stock in undergraduate rankings considering the fact that the graduate programs are what really separate the cream of the crop schools from the rest.
For example, UC Berkeley is only #20 (still very good, obviously) in undergraduate rankings (largely because it's a public school), but it's widely seen as being on the Harvard/Stanford/MIT/Columbia level for graduate programs. Those worldwide rankings posted a few posts up reflect the level of graduate programs.
The one that has us above Vanderbilt?

AAU distinction has a bias against the deep south. It is ran by liberals.
Also Alabama is held at a disadvantage because AAU also looks at research as a big part of its distinction.
Most research in the Alabama system takes place at UAH(Engineering) and UAB(Medical). THe three schools share the same board of regents, chairman. But are still looked at as different schools.
I wonder that if UAH and UAB rebranded as University of Alabama - Hunstville Campus/Birmingham Campus that the overall profile could improve.
Also, a good measure on the Alabama v Auburn debate can be endowment size.

quote:At least a partial answer to this is that (at least in the sciences) where you go to school does not matter nearly as much as who you study under and what you do during your time there. Your degree matters, but your publications matter a whole hell of a lot more.

we should just average all the rankings together.

I think AAU is crooked. I mean we all know those guys are getting paid by runners anyway. I think all the AAU schools should go on probation.

I disagree. The value of a quality educational environment over a mediocre to bad educational environment is palpable. And for some fields, you simply need that quality education or you're going nowhere (e.g., law).
And how does one measure the value of that quality education? To murder a movie quote: You just spent $100,000 on an education you coulda got for a dolla fifty in late charges at the library.
The best and most fair way to measure education value is Return On Investment. If the college better prepares you for Law school or med school or whatever, then you should see graduates getting into and succeeding at post-graduate education more.

I'm assuming my post will be preceded by pages of people who went to bad schools arguing over the metric. And maybe, just maybe, someone will take solace in the fact they are ranked higher than their in-state rival (even though the metric is "bullshite" and they should be ranked way higher). How'd I do?

So there shouldn't be any teachers, nurses, communication majors, etc?
Somebody has to do that stuff, and their college costs are the same as the kid who gets a degree in chemical engineering or accounting.
So - like I said earlier - I agree in theory, but there are certain places that specialize in degrees that naturally pay more, and others that supply a larger variety because their mission is to supply the state with jobs in all sectors. That is naturally going to drag down their overall ROI.

quote:Like you said return on investment, but also opportunities for undergraduates to participate in research and for placement into post graduate programs.
And how does one measure the value of that quality education?
I know in my case, I was able to get two summer fellowships, present at a professional conference, and have the data from the project I directed published (I was a middle author) because of programs that were being run by my department at Alabama. I don't know that I would have had the same opportunities at other Universities.
