The biggest shift in college football happened almost overnight, with so little warning it’s practically gone unnoticed. But as of today, with the release of the preseason Amway Coaches Poll for 2017, the SEC is no longer the sport’s most overrated conference.

That honor now belongs to the Big Ten.

While the SEC boasts the nation’s No. 1 team in Alabama, the coaches have put four Big Ten teams in the top 10 to start the season.

Four teams from the conference that hasn’t scored a single point in two consecutive appearances in the College Football Playoff.

Four teams from the conference that face-planted during the most recent bowl season, going 3-7.

Four teams from the conference that, in the last two seasons, has a 20-24 record against the other Power Five leagues.

Hard to argue with facts. I agree with them.

Agree. And I'm an Ohio state fan.

Thankfully we have a playoff system to award a champion and we aren't reliant on bias anymore.

As usual, they didn't look deep enough. There are NO Big Ten teams ranked between #10 and #35. Six SEC teams from #11 - #31.

If you are writing about a conference, you should look at the entire conference. Four Big Ten teams in Top 35. Seven SEC teams in Top 35.

On paper the only potentially elite teams are Bama, UGA, AU and LSU and three of those have major, major questions.

B1G has OSU, UW, PSU and a paper tiger in UM.

OSU is for real. UW, PSU can be lumped in as paper tigers as well.

I hate the Big Ten, but I can understand those rankings.

I think everyone would agree that Ohio State is a top 10 team. Ditto for Michigan now that Harbaugh has his players for the most part. Penn State came on strong last year and has quite a few returning starters from a team won the Big Ten and almost won the Rose Bowl. I think most would agree on those three being in the top 10. The outlier is Wisconsin - I'll admit that I don't know much about them going into this year - but they're a solid program year in and year out.

So yeah, at face value, it's laughable that the Big Ten would have 4 top 10 teams, but it's understandable when you actually dig in a bit. Michigan plays Florida in week 1, and Ohio State plays Oklahoma in week 2, so we'll find out about them pretty quickly.

ETA - Wisconsin's schedule is absolute trash. They might go 11-1 this year.

And therein lies the answer. The Big Ten is tremendously top heavy, and always has been. They have four teams that are apt to go 12-0, 11-1, 10-2, and 9-3. Those records will put all four in the Top 10.

Penn St. should be solid and finish top 10. They have a very strong offense.

The team that lost to USC to end the season last year? I don't think they have any argument to being the #1 team last year.
