The QBs have been working out with the coaches every day since the end of spring practice

Highly unlikely, since that is against NCAA rules.

I think that is the biggest issue with Johnson. He may well light it up in practice and definitely has the talent to outshine everyone else if he is playing well. The issue is until the lights come on on gameday, you have no idea what to expect from him, and I'm not sure how much of his practice work can be trusted after last year

This is what makes coaching so hard. You have guys that play lights out in practice and freeze up in a game....then you have guys that do not practice well, then when the adrenaline flows can dominate a game.

Me either. But it's driving us crazy. The offseason between 2013-2014 was the best in a while because we knew for once in a long time that we didn't have a QB battle. That's a good feeling.

That is a good point but that isn't fun to talk or speculate about.

That's what most believe. He got majority of 2nd string snaps last year. Williams has the most experience , Staley has the most talent , I have no idea about Tiano. So, who knows about the game 1 starter.

Well to add to it Johnson played well in his limited role the first two years, and played great for the first half of Arky in 2014 as well, so you know he has it in him. The coaches have to figure out which guy they think he is this year, and if it were me coming off last year, I'm not sure I'd take that chance

Ya, maybe I should have included them in the op. Haven't seen as much discussion compared to the other teams. Still some good info.

For Alabama, Bateman will start the USC game. If he plays well I assume he will stay put, if he struggles Blake Barnett will get his chance.
I predict Bateman starting game 1, but at some point in the year, maybe week 3 vs ole miss, he struggles and Barnett takes over.

Dobbs is also being compared to Vince Young apparently.

Never really cared for Vince but would take him in a second.

Since someone will undoubtedly ask what the hell happened to Patrick Towles when the season starts, he transferred to Boston College when Drew Barker took his spot.

JUCO dual-threat QB Stephen Johnson gave him a little bit of a push but not nearly enough to unseat him.

i'm wondering what updates you think are occurring during summer workouts when coaches can't coach?

quote:

That would make sense if I started a thread like this every week. Doesn't have to be about something that happened in the last two weeks or month. Coaches are still discussing things that happened during the fall.

The NCAA changed that rule a while back didn't they? On the field coaches get 8 hrs/week with their players, 2 of which can be football related.

Dobbs would have to go off for a 300/200 game in playoff or national title game to even be considered in that discussion. Dobbs is a nice player. Young is a college football legend.

Saban said during media days that Bateman would start if we played today. He is ahead right now. I think the staff wants Bateman to win the job but that's just my opinion. We don't know which guy is winning over his teammates during summer drills as that would be who likely starts against USC..

If JJ runs on the field for the first series against Clepsom, I will tear my TV off the wall

I don't really know why people keep saying this, Tiano looks to have the most natural talent; and what does Staley do better than Fitz? It ain't running.

Bateman is the starter, period.

Saban does like to play games with his qbs if he feels they aren't leading. He did it with mccarron and he became a great player and last year with coker by inserting Bateman as the starter after pregame warm-ups of the ole miss game. It got cokers head out of his arse and he became the leader we needed. If Bateman isn't doing what Saban needs, he'll put in Barnett to send him a message too.

We all like to debate and speculate...but we don't have skin in the game. the coaches? their livelihood is on the line. If they make a poor decision they might lose their job. I'm with you. I'm not sure I would take a chance, either.
