Texas certainly has political power in Texas, no questioning that. They are just far more powerful with Dems than the GOP and A&M is the opposite. It has to do with the political donors as much as the actual politicians.

One example is when Dan Branch tried to call a committee meeting to question whether or not A&M could go to the SEC and it was slammed shut in a hurry with his tail between his legs. Branch has big Aggie donors and his law firm is run by a former Aggie Yell Leader. Ask some lobbyists around Austin about who has the political power in the State.

I don't fear Abbott, he has a lot of Aggie donors as well and there is no gain in going after A&M.

The funny thing about Longhorns is they think Perry is out to get them when that's hardly the case. He just doesn't give them special treatment like they have grown so used to. Their BoR is still almost all Texas grads and almost all of the flak Powers has gotten is because of the multitude of scandals that have gone on during his tenure and his inability to achieve the goals set forth by himself and the BoR (things like graduation rates, fundraising, etc.)

Powers has done a masterful job of convincing Texas folks that it is all about Perry the bogeyman Aggie or talking about the 7 Solutions stuff that barely has any real affect on Texas at all even if they were implemented. He just wants to be unaccountable to anything and to treat his BoR as though they work for him, he's an arrogant arse.

BTW, Texas needs A&M more than ever before now especially if they decide to make a conference move or go independent. A&M can choose to support Texas or to swing their support to the other 3 schools that would be screwed over in that process. Texas can't mess with A&M's PUF money without risking their own either, esp because Texas gets 2/3rds.

The days when Texas could appoint a liberal Texas grad to be A&M's President (like they did with Vandiver) are long gone.

It's touch & go.

If the bats haven't found a suitable new home by the time Kyle Field renovations displace them, Odegard said, they're more likely to be in contact with humans, find their way into other buildings, and die. "If they are suddenly homeless, they are more likely to be captured and vulnerable to predators," she said.

"If they're trying to find new places to live, they just might end up in places where people won't be pleased to have them, some out of belief in some of the old myths or the belief that all bats are rabid."

Kyle Field renovations could create problems for bats

You will never convince A&M fans USC is a better job, but it is, and everyone else but A&M fans know it. A&M is not a historical program even close to USC. Does not have the clout of USC, the glamour, the glitz, USC doesn't even have to win lots of games for their appeal to remain. If A&M loses games then they lose their appeal. USC still has being in LA, the wonderful history.

A&M also has to compete with other schools in the SEC

We've always competed against LSU for recruits, as both schools heavily recruit Louisiana, East Texas, and the Houston area. That was the case back in the Southwest Conference era, and barring a major tetonic plate shift that moves Louisiana and the southeastern US several thousand miles away it will always be the case.

And as far as other schools, how many Bama recruits were flipped from A&M? A'Shawn Robinson was a last minute flip from t.u. and he was never considering A&M.

and Big 12 with recruits

Outside of Texas and Oklahoma (and the latter is becoming increasingly iffy) this is plain wrong. Tech and your Okie Lite are competing for whoever A&M, Texas, and OU don't want. And Baylor and TCU aren't looking for the traditional recruit either, so they're never going up against A&M.

quote:

It is much easier to recruit to come to USC and they also have national recruiting inroads, something A&M doesn't have.

And the #1 QB in the nation is from the Phoenix area. Last time I checked Texas hasn't annexed Arizona.
