I assume the thought is Tom Herman

Anyone who thinks we should have gone after herman over smart just isn't thinking clearly.

Sure TH has a lot going for him, and personally I love the hell out of the guy and any school would be lucky to have him. However, there's a few major major things to consider:

1) First and foremost, he wants to coach Texas. I blieve he's said many times it's his dream job. Pretty obvious strong isn't getting it done so you're looking at a few years tops before they make a move and TH will be their #1 choice. Why bring a guy in for 2 years if he's gonna bail?

2) Recruiting would have suffered greatly. You dont' hire a coach because of recruits, I know that. But wiht the offense he runs, we would have lost out on a number of good offensive guys we got (including Eason almost certainly, who probably would be at UF right now taking 1st team reps), not to mention what defensive guys want to play on a team whose offense goes 100mph and you're on the field all the time?

3) Tying in with recruiting, I'm sure TH is quite good but when you compare him with KS as it relates to GA HS recruiting....well it's not even remotely close

Kirby is an alum, a defensive whiz, a lights our recruiter, and a guy who should be here for a decade. It was definitley the right move.

We didn't settle. He was choice #1.

Just to clarify, I agree with you here. Was just trying to give thoughts on who others may have considered as a "better option". I think reason #1 is absolutely the reason he wasn't the right fit. When you know he wants a Texas job, why try and bring him in... it would be the exact same as Kiffin at Tennessee... everyone *knew* he wanted the USC job, just had no idea it would open up so quickly. In this case, hell Texas is probably just a season away depending on what happens next year. Even if a temporary reprieve happens, still going to be hot seat talk for a while.

From a recruiting standpoint, TH did just fine recruiting metro-Atlanta... doesn't have Kirby's ties to the state though. Might open up more Texas recruits but my guess is we'd still struggle to pull them away... Texas people are pretty unique.

I'm still holding out judgement on Chaney as the OC pick since I felt that was going to be his most important hire, but I do appreciate the longevity of his career and the fact that recruits seem to *love* him. That it also helped us land Pittman to shore up what has been some abysmal OL coaching and recruiting over the last several seasons, icing on the cake. < insert fat joke about cake >
