Teams like Auburn, Bama, and Lsu don't need a great quarterback to be successful. Bama won two national championships with McCarron and he barely got drafted. Auburn was just runner up with a safety playing quarterback.

However, Sumlin does need an elite quarterback to be successful, we all saw how terrible Houston was when Keenum went down. 5-7 in Conference-USA.

If Auburn Bama or LSU were forced to start their third string QB for the entire season because of injury they would all fail to meet expectations.

So would the other 121 teams in college football.

Thats debatable. most AU fans believe our 2nd/3rd string QB are better than NM. IJS

Im not saying that we would be better off without him just that JJ could come in at any moment and still win games

First off, no one said anything about the entire season, you just threw that in there.

And of course they would fail to meet expectations if the expectations were to win a title, but I said aggy would be 6th or 7th in the division. That wouldn't happen to Bama if they had a third string quarterback because they could rely on their run game and defense to win games.

aggy has no defense, they would fall harder than any other team in the league if they don't get great quarterback play.

It would actually be pretty entertaining for Bama with either Blake Sims (would have to run a shitton of zone read and QB runs) or David Cornwell who's a TF

Exactly, that's my point. I'm not saying it as an indictment on those programs or coaches.

Not this football fan. I think we would struggle badly right now with Jeremy Johnson at QB. He is just not ready yet. If you cant see that, you are not looking hard enough

Like it or not, Nick Marshall is masterful at our offense that was set up for him. His athleticism and ability to run the read option to the t is why we did so well last year. That and a great offensive line.

JJ is no where ready and does not run the read as well as Nick.

Gus set the offense up for him perfectly. When he is gone, it will change again

Expectations are relative. Most of our fans expect us to win 8 or 9 games this year and finish 3rd-5th in the division. If we started our third string QB for a significant portion of the season we probably win 5 games or so. Bama and Auburn expect to go undefeated or have one loss and playing for a NC. I bet both would be around 8 wins in this scenario.

Marshall runs that O pretty efficiently and will most likely be better next year. What's going to be interesting is when Malzahn gets a 4 or 5 star QB with an NFL arm.

Johnson has the arm. I just don't know if he has the attitude to be great. He always looks flat to me. He can throw much better than Marshall but Marshall is a winner and a competitor. I just have not seen that in Johnson yet.

it will be interested to see how Shawn White does once he gets on campus. I am a big fan of Jeremy Johnson and like the potential but I want to see some fire from him. He just looks like he DGAF sometimes.

cool. your opinion in which you are entitled to.

I said he could come in and win games, maybe not a championship but a lot of people said the same about NM...

having seen him play through HS at carver and the few games he has played at AU, he has the talent, maybe even moreso than NM but i say again IMO

this is exactly what im talking about...

ive seen JJ playing first hand for about 4 years now and i agree

but i think i would probably have a similar attitude not playing.

JJ knows he is better, so being 2nd string behind NM who just has time and exp on his side can be a little degrading

I certainly think he has the talent. And I love his size and accuracy. But I think we need to see him in a real tight game to see how he handles it all.

I still say he is our future QB. I think he will do very well. I just don't think he can take us to the playoffs this year. Its either Marshall or no playoffs…

Hopefully, Gus will give Jeremy more snaps this year and let him get some experience. Thats the problem with the West, there is very little time to grow up. I think some of the teams with new QB's will see that this year
