The sooner A&M can get rid of all the Perry appointed regents the better. They're ruining an excellent university, and the longer they're in positions of authority, the more damage they'll do.

And at a time when Texas as a state is in serious need of more tier one universities, ruining one of the biggest will do lasting harm to Texas' economic potential.

Yet, they are AAU qualified.

....while being ranked at #111.

I don't get the AAU at all. I am missing something obviously.

It's almost entirely about research, and research dollars. Obviously, being AAU isn't a bad thing. But it's not automatically a sign of an elite university. There are many reasons a university can be elite, and many fields that don't apply to AAU status but nevertheless reflect well on a university. AAU membership is a specific and frequently fuzzy metric, not a gestalt analysis of a university's quality.

AAu puts a big emphasis on research dollars.

If they were to consider UAB(medical) and UAH(engineering/nasa rocket center) then Alabama would be considered for AAU status.

The Alabama administration is working to move more research to the Tuscaloosa campus. Maybe sometime in the future....

I think they should consider the Univeristu of Alabama system for AAU.

Tuscaloosa is the core of the system and carries a good amount of research. But it is weighted towards standard programs that educate the most kids.

UAB and UAH both do a ton a research. UAB is a very good medical school and UAH has a ton of engineering research taking place there. UAH is closely related to nasa rocket center and the military contractors there.

I believe that Alabama is moving more and more research from UAH and UAB to Tuscaloosa, in an effort to attain AAU status.

Really thought Missouri and Texas A&M's AAU status would have put both of them in the top 50.

A&M is in the process of a massive expansion due to the number of kids that need to be placed into Public schools within the state. It has hurt their ratings, because they are expanding to let more kids in vs. denying applicants.

UAB would split from the university before the medical school moves to Tuscaloosa.

That is very unfortunate.

Standards sure are low these days.

Specifically, federal research dollars.

Because membership in the AAU is by invitation, not qualification, I think there are some schools that will never get invites. Some of those schools are in the SEC. Schools like UGA, Bama, Auburn, USC and LSU have stronger academics than some AAU institutions. Others, like UK are stronger research schools than some of those with AAU status.

From the map below, it can be seen that most AAU schools are located in the North and West Coast. The South has a few but that number is not representative of the population, which is larger than any other region. I seriously doubt that the map will change much this century.

I guess I've been to Dallas a dozen times on business trips and I'm not impressed. I know I'm missing something because I hear from those I respect how great it is, but I just have never felt it when I'm there. Hot and flat and sprawling.

It's a cool place to be a young professional. Tons of nightlife for all different tastes, trendy walkable neighborhoods like Uptown, Deep Ellum, Greenville, and Bishop Arts. Tons of awesome restaurants. Major stop for big time shows and concerts. That sort of stuff.

After that stage of your life is over, you pretty much nailed it. Hot, flat, sprawling cookie cutter bedroom suburbs, filled with chain restaurants, big box stores, and generic office buildings.

LSU is much different now from when I graduated (which really wasn't even that long ago). The state of Louisiana refuses to really fund the school, yet refuses to allow them to truly make it harder to get into. We have some great colleges in LSU, but unless they have their own donors throwing them money, they are constantly having to take cuts.

So basically; Louisiana is too poor to properly fund LSU and too poor to allow the school to raise tuition properly because then it could not afford TOPS (local scholarship provided by state). Louisiana badly needs to consolidate the number of public schools.
