Top 5 Programs in the Last 20 Years + Honorable Mentions (2003-2023)

1. Alabama - 6 national titles
Not even debatable. 6 national titles in the last 20 years. They could have gone 0-12 the other 14 seasons and still be #1 with that many ships.
2. LSU - 3 national titles.
Championships have the heaviest metric rankings in my opinion. A couple schools may have a higher win percentage since 03 but LSU is the only one not named Bama with more than 2 in the last 20 years and are still top 10 in win percentages despite having a handful of down years.
3. Georgia - 2 national titles
Serious new money with the recent ships, but arguably the most consistently good winning program next to Ohio State and Oklahoma in the last 20 years. Obviously wouldn’t be ranked 3rd 2 years ago without the ships. The national titles and going back to back the last 2 seasons catapult them into #3. One of the best win percentages in the country in the last 2 decades as well.
4. Clemson - 2 national titles
Clemson gets #4 over Ohio State due to being consistent but never great 2000-2010 and then winning multiple big bowls and 2 ships from then on. National titles are a massive metric that push them past Ohio State. Multiple national titles and 10 win seasons put them at 4.
5. Ohio State
Easily the best winning percentage in the country in the last 20 years to go along with 1 national title. They have more NY6 / Major Trophy Bowl wins than LSU and Georgia but I rank them behind them due to their blowouts in Big time games and only 1 championship. No one has lost and lost bigger on the big Stage than Ohio State the last 20 years. It’s one thing to make it to the big game and lose, it’s another thing entirely to be blown out; 41-14 Florida, 38-24 LSU, 31-0 Clemson, 52-24 Bama.
Honorable Mention:
Florida (2 national titles top 15 win percentage, last decade of irrelevance excludes us)
Oklahoma (2nd highest win percentage since 2003 but 0 national titles)

You're like the inverse of Clemson, yet you have them 4th.

Certain fanbases watching the world atomic clock for the day that they can say LSU only won 2 nattys in the last 20 years.
Boys, it ain’t come yet.

Auburn had undefeated seasons in 2004 and 2010 and an NC appearance in 2013, while playing in a historically strong SECW.
I'd insert them above Clemson.

Well technically I have them 4th and I agree I had trouble putting them there. Their overall win percentage is top 12 though (someone can fact check me im not positive) and I also put more emphasis on recent success. They won 2 national titles in the last 6 seasons. Our championships were from 15 years ago. I thought it would be a little biased of me to rank Florida 4th when we haven’t won a championship in over a decade.
If we had any semblance of success the last decade I’d rank Florida higher than Ohio State and Clemson but it’s hard for me to do that when we’ve had like 3 10 win season and an orange bowl to hang our hats on.

You have 1 national title and several losing seasons. There is no way Auburn is considered a top 5 program the last 20 years.

No objective measure puts Auburn over Clemson.

Well done.
I get the Auburn point ..to a point but the one title doesn't outweigh Clemson in my opinion but Clemson certainly played in a worse conference so I could see Auburn on there.

Let's call it 1.5 national titles (and that's being very generous)...but you also have only 5 ten win seasons vs 4 losing seasons.
Honorable mention AT BEST.

I would put Ohio State ahead of Clemson.
Ohio State won a title in 2002, the year before your cutoff date.

You just countered your own argument.

I'd also take into account they've made the playoffs 6 total times, made the title game 4 times, winning it all twice. I believe they have a few other BCS/NY6 bowls on top of it.
To me, you take away Florida's two title years, you're left with 3 really good years aside from them (09, 12, 20) where if you take away Clemson's 2 titles, they still have 4 other playoff appearances and multiple other BCS/NY6 bowl appearances. Clemson still gets the edge to me.

Agreed. We did technically go 10-3 with a NY6 bowl win in 2018 and 11-2 with an Orange Bowl in 2019 but that hardly constitutes amazing years in my opinion lol. But yeah, I agree with your analysis.

My cutoff date is 2003. I get 2023 hasn’t played yet but technically 20 seasons have been played in the last 20 years. If you want to make your own thread starting in 02, go for it. Mine however starts in 2003 (the last 20 seasons played) and Ohio State has 1 national title in that span.

That's not meaningless, especially when you compare strength of schedule.

Certainly not meaningless but speaking of elite achievements Florida has accomplished it certainly isn’t amazing either.
Would you put Florida top 5?
