Northerners are absolutely clueless about winter storms in the South and the differences in road conditions and resources where they live vs the South. They pre treat their interstates, highways, and roads with melting agents before storms and have plows constantly clearing roads because they get regular snow and ice. They very rarely drive on ice covered roads. They also have snow tires that few in the South have.

I'd challenge Northerners to navigate all the very hilly interstate and major highway stretches in Birmingham and Atlanta during rush hour with an untreated, unplowed inch thick sheet of ice on the road. Let's see how they drive on roads and navigate large hills that have haven't been touched by plows and see how many wrecks result. Better yet, find the longest, steepest driveway in your Midwestern or Northeastern neighborhood and run hoses of water down it all night tonight. See how well you get up and down it in the morning.

Well I did just fine in Atlanta last night and today. I've also driven in much worse on rural roads around Lake Winnipesaukee. Sorry but southerners don't know how to drive in this weather and northerners do. Can't tell you how many people I saw driving way to fast and follwing to close today while driving on ice.

I agree with everything you said except this. No one I know puts snow tires on their cars anymore and I live in Minnesota. It was true about 40 years ago. We drive on the same tires year 'round.

We have our share of idiots in the north as well. We have a lot of four wheel drive vehicles and some people assume they are bulletproof. They don't realize that four wheel drives don't stop any faster and once they start sliding, they are done for. Many people drive way too fast and follow way too close in slippery conditions.

Yea I always tell people 4 wheel drive doesn't do any good when all 4 wheels are on ice. One thing that really aggravates me is people who think a pickup truck is the best vehicle. I tried to convince my boss to put some sandbags in the back of his truck yesterday and he refused. He couldn't seem to grasp the importance of it.

Speak for yourselves. There was nary a problem for the 2 million people that live in SE Louisiana and coastal Miss.,because we prepared for the freezing ice and sleet on the highways. No fatalities or injuries; indeed very few accidents at all. No one stranded in school, buses or on interstates.

That's because we closed every interstate, state highway, and road with so much as a speed bump on it.

really? Because 3 inches of snow and a category 1 hurricane seem pretty different

Its the ability to respond that is the question. Not the incident itself. Those people lost their fricking minds and half the city was destroyed by something that happens down here damn near every year. The difference is we are used to it, just like they are used to the snow and ice. frick anyone that thinks differently.

Yes, there really was no difference between the New York metropolitan area and the Gulf Coast, especially population density wise

Nope. None.

This is true, I've never heard of anyone using snow tires, haha.

No on snow tires, and only partial credit on the plowing/treatment. Trust me, unless you live in a major city -- where you won't be driving very fast anyway -- you'll be driving on icy roads throughout the winter up north. The snowplows can only do so much, and certainly can't scrape the roads clean. The salt trucks help, but you're still likely to be driving in some pretty rough conditions lots of days. Ice happens just as easily up there as it does down south, and when the plows can't keep up with the traffic that's melting the slush and letting it refreeze, you'll pray for a nice clean 90 degree winter's day in the Texas Panhandle as you lose traction on blacktop so smooth you can't even tell which parts are ice and which parts are just melted salt.

it was a category 1..... the next thing to a tropical storm..... They handled it terribly because they were not used to having to handle it.

Talk the population density shite to the folks in NOLA. If Katrina had been a category 1 90% of the country wouldnt even remember its name today.

Northerners don't care about college football, all it would do is elicit a rolling of the eyes to whomever that is directed at.

What happened in Birmingham and Atlanta had nothing to do with people overreacting to some snow.

'This shite is hilarious. I live in Houston and the city recorded over 1200 wrecks on Friday. Friday was the worst of the 2 ice shower days. Bunch of good ole boys hauling arse in their 1500's or 150's ect... Guy I work with from Wisconsin had 3 trucks speed by him on 1-10 and all 3 spun out on overpasses. All three of the vehicle are now in our shop getting repaired. In any kind of weather aside from sunshine, Texans can't drive for shite.
