LSU should be "Bayou Bengals"
Auburn should be "War Eagles"
pretty basic stuff

In my mind, Auburn was, is, and always will be the 'Tigers.'
But it just so happens that they also have a war cry tradition that spawned a real life eagle 'mascot' that is the feature of their pre-game festivities, and is ingrained into their history, and thus into SEC traditions.
So they have a costumed tiger mascot and a live one, which is pretty cool. If I'm not mistaken, the eagle's name is Tiger also (correct me if I'm wrong Aubies.)
And, like 'Bayou Bengals' that LSU is sometimes referred to, Auburn has been called 'The Plainsmen' -in reference (I'm assuming) to 'The loveliest village on the plains.'

Didn't Tim Brando start that shite?

quote:The term "Plainsmen" was actually born out of match ups with LSU and Sewanee. Media would distinguish between the two tigers by calling them "Tigers from the Bayou" and "Tigers from the Plains." Eventually was shortened to just "Plainsmen." At no point has Auburn ever acknowledged it as a mascot, just like "War Eagle."

And you're correct that it comes from the saying which also comes from the Goldsmith poem just like the Tigers mascot.

I don't get tigers who yell war eagle. Why don't you just roar like any self respecting tiger would?

because as long as they don't someone will keep starting threads like this one about it..

The War Eagle story was a complete fabrication. It never happened. But Auburn said frick it, it sounds kinda cool, this could be something that some gullible rednecks will believe so we can use it to increase the size of the fambly.

Blah blah
Do the words 'Crimson Tide' most resemble:
- An elephant
- A woman's time of the month
- A drunk wearing a houndstooth hat

When I was a soph. at LSU we played them in a televised game back in 1969. In those days they called themselves the Plainsmen. For your current LSU students, go to the library and look at the book called the history of the SEC.

Auburn's just trying to make everyone happy, by being whatever you want them to be.

As an LSU Fan I know where the chant "War Eagle" comes from and yes I think that there are so many "Tiger" teams Auburn War Eagles sounds awesome. I don't have any real feelings to what Auburn calls themselves, but War Eagles sounds great.
LSU = Bayou Bengals = Fighting Tigers, common nicknames, but what would be a great name replacement for LSU and be serious. I was serious about Auburn's possible new name.
My suggestion would be LSU Red Raptors. Now let me explain. Red is not about colors and Raptors is not about dinosaurs.
Lots of states have Red Fire Ants, but in the bayou and swamps its more than most any other state per capita. Plus LSU's D normally swarms likes Red Fire Ants.
Raptors refers to some of our birds, because many of them are larger predators.
One other suggestion is LSU Diamondbacks. Its not poisonous and it eats all other snakes including Cottonmouths which could be another name.
Since this is all fantasy, LSU Honey Badgers and require all Defensive members die their hair that gold color like The real "Honey Badger".
Ok make fun now!!!
