It is certainly the best time to catch LSU if your state.

Personally, I think it's an awful time to catch LSU.

If MissSt wants to end this streak, it's not going to be in DeathValley, LSU's SEC opener, at night, the week before we play cupcake NewMexicoState.

For them to end the streak, it's going to have to be an 11am kickoff, probably in Starkville, the week before we play Florida or Auburn....something along those lines where LSU "looks past" Miss St.

The way things are set up this year, LSU is definitely not "looking past" MissSt. All the people giving MissSt a chance actually just plays into the hands of LSU ... LSU will be ready, and really the only chance IMO that MissSt ever has of beating LSU is for LSU to not be ready.

As per the OP, good post. To this day I still believe the Tenn and MissSt overtime games in 2000 are the two games that turned this program around. And you are definitely correct, MissSt was a solid team at the time, winning over MissSt was definitely a "quality" win.

Yup.

I went to Vegas for the first time in 2001 -- first chance I had to bet at a legal sports book. It was the weekend of the State/LSU game. I bet $100 on LSU but I was nervous knowing our history with State. We destroyed State in 2001 and I don't think I've worried about playing State one day since 2001.

I'll admit State has their best shot in years this weekend. Don't blame them one bit for being excited about their chances.

They have nothing to lose. If they lose, it's expected. If they win, it will be the stuff of legend. Either way, the grind will go on.

We care so much because it is an important game for us to have a big year. Beat lsu, jump into the top twenty, and have an off week before a&m and auburn at home with a shite load of momentum. Davis wade would be the most electric it has been in history and the highest attendance. Its just important.

Great read, bro. Thanks for posting! And for the TLDR crowd, if you're a fan of SEC history, take 2-3 minutes and read it.

Agreed. Thanks, and good luck!

I understand.

When LSU sucked balls in the early/mid 90s, the Auburn game usually was the early season make or break in conference play.

Which is why 1994's meltdown against Auburn (20 years ago today) was so very, very painful at the time.

And the next year the Magic Came Back the night we beat Auburn.

Now it's just another game.

Right. Auburn has been that game for us too the last few years. This time it happens to be yall, which is why yall are getting grinded. If we win, a&m will get double grinded and yall can join if you would like.

Correct. The LSU upset of Florida was in 2001 in BR when the Gators were No. 1.

Very good post otherwise. As an older fan, I'm still haunted by the memory of losing to State five in a row from 1980-84. The '82 and '84 games were clear upsets. The '84 loss to MSU denied LSU a share of the SEC title, though the Tigers still went to the Sugar Bowl because Florida won the league while on probation.

Not sure why we don't play them in September anymore. We did from 1992 thru 2000. Since 2000, the game is all over the damn calendar.

For a long time (1947-1991), LSU and State always played in mid November. State has two wins in Baton Rouge outside of November: 1920 and 1944.

Ancient history, I know.

Sorry, I was in college, so the memory was hazy. I tried to write off the cuff and thought the Florida upset was in '00.

Anyway, point remains, Saban killed MSU that night, and LSU (along with the upset of Tennessee) took MSU's momentum away from them.

I remember the vivid details from the stands that night in Baton Rouge. I can still remember the best PA announcer in the SEC announcing the final score as we were leaving. It's haunting.
