I remember when State was really good...but they always seemed to trip up to teams they shouldn't have.

Had LSU won 3 more sec games and MSU lost 3 more in that span the records would have been even.

Well you could say that about a lot of different scenarios.

I do remember when State was good but as an LSU fan I never feared them. We had success against State during one of our worst decades ever.

That's because even in our best years, for some reason LSU normally got the best of us. Hell, in the year we went to the SEC Championship game y'all beat us pretty badly. That doesn't change the fact that we were the best overall team in the West though.

over 4 years that is pretty close...i doubt it would be anything close to that with the best team and worst team in the west the last 4 years.

Not saying you weren't...I am saying the west was very competitive...no real powerhouse.

I agree.

ETA: The difference in what we were and us being dominant during that time period was the lack of an offense. Our defenses were fricking filthy.

How did you feel about Croom? Am I wron to think he was good for MSU? I am an outsider but he seemed to be a good coach.

I think the point is that Choctaw posted that MSU "wasn't even close" to being the best team in the SEC West from 1997-2000.

Then he disappears when confronted with the actual records.

Either Choctaw was

A. too young to remember that there was a time when MSU was pretty good
B. he is blinded by the LSU dominance of MSU (even during the time period)
C. Was not aware of the records of the SEC West teams from 1997-2000.
D. Was just spouting off without any attempt to research.

That's all.

Sorry, but I still find it amusing that the high point of Moo State's football program consist of a 4 year period of time where they won zero national championships, zero SEC championships, and fewer western division championships than Auburn won during the same period of time

i've got shite to do, son

i never said MSU wasn't "pretty good"...but at no point in my 39 years on this planet have they been the best team in the West. i don't care what the record is.

Great post.

LSU fans weren’t too high on this new coach, but he managed to pull an upset of Spurrier’s Gators and a highly rated Tennessee team after that UAB loss.

Florida murdered LSU in 2000. Just a correction.

Gameday did not travel to campuses at the time

Uhh, what? No.

Gameday was at #1 Florida State v. #7 Miami that day and never remotely considered heading to Starkville.

Additionally, Gameday has been traveling to locations since 1993.

Well there's a two part answer to this question.

1) In the years after Jackie left, we needed someone to come in and be a disciplinarian. Jackie recruited a ton of low character JUCO guys, hoping that he could keep them under wraps for a couple of years before the issues started arising. He did a damn good job of doing it, but that method wasn't going to work forever. In that regard, I think Croom was a good hire. In his first year at State I think we only had like 52 scholarship players because he kicked so many of them off the team for doing stupid shite.

2) The second part of this answer is that we just kept him too long. He should have came in and cleaned house, replenished the roster back to the standard 85 and then should have been fired because he was not a good x's and o's coach. I would say the reason that we kept him longer than we should (and I say this in the most PC sensitive way possible) is because he was the first African American head coach in the SEC. No one had really been in a position to make a firing like that. It should have been about him being a coach, not what race he was, but we all know that stuff like that is tip-toed around heavily.

So my answer is yes and no.
