I've heard the new guy's problem is that he knows how to make golf courses look pretty and in fairness when Shields-Watkins isn't played on it's very pretty but he doesn't know a damn thing about football fields.
He's not a golf guy. He really specialized in baseball fields

Interesting article. I guess re-sodding is probably less work for the actual grounds crew to maintain nice looking grass, but you would never develop a really good root base. Others have had issues in the past with re-sodding. Didn't the NC game a few years back have a terrible playing surface because of this? Maybe the year Auburn won.
I'd imagine TN is similar to AR climate zone. I know it's tough to grow warm climate grass here because of the cold, and cold climate grass because of the heat. I don't like field turf but it does hold up better come November than when we had real grass.

Never thought I would say this, but it was surprisingly interesting..
Never knew that much about turf and never knew you could be a world renowned consultant regarding grass

We have the added problem of having a rainy season during football season because we're basically a temperate rain forest without the forest (the Smoky Mtns are a temperate rain forest - the only other one in the US is out West in Northern Cal). It rained and rained and rained even more than normal this year and got played on after and during those rains and has become a complete mess. Most places are a lot drier in the fall whereas we have a rainy season (well actually one of our rainy seasons we only get a short break from them).

The administration doesn't care if the football team is good, so I would be surprised if they really cared if the football field was good.

It also baffles me that UT has one of the world’s foremost authorities on growing grass – Dr. John Sorochan
Man, the pressure on that guy to have the best lawn in his neighborhood must be stressful.
