I think having the SECCG is a bigger issue than having a decent ooc game scheduled in this new alignment.

I'd rather Bama schedule a Wisconsin than have to potentially play Georgia twice before the CFP even starts... potentially having to now beat the same SEC opponent THREE times in order to win the NC. Pretty crazy.

I hear you, but the SECCG isnt going anywhere.

I could however envision a future where the conference championship games are somehow a part of the playoff.

TV revenue makes it here to stay. Otherwise the game makes zero sense in the scheme of a 12 team playoffs

I think they should can it or let the 3&4 sec teams play for a bid to the 12.

Correct. Too much money involved.

The game will only mean something if a playoff spot is up for grabs.

Shelve it. If you haven’t qualified for the playoff you’re not playing in it.

I get the revenue bit, other than that there are only negatives.

Just a question, but with the playoffs will the conference championship game result in an automatic bid for the playoffs even if the champions are a 3 or 4 loss team. Kind of like the basketball tournament.

That could make it interesting. It will become more difficult to go undefeated with no divisions probably so someone could slip in.

But I doubt a 3 or 4 sec loss team will slip in without divisions though.

Now that 12 teams is here, it needs to be done away with.
1. The 2 teams in the game are probably already in the playoffs. Why risk another game to injury and be handicapped in the playoffs in a meaningless game.
2. The conference sole goal should be helping teams get to the playoffs and be successful there.
3. Money and TV doesn't mean anything if #2 is the goal. The conference will easily make the money back from teams in the playoff bowl games. SEC and TV ratings is never going to be an issue.

I say shelve it. I never have liked the SECCG. I do not want to see Bama have to beat any team 3 times in one season. That’s just stupid and if that’s the case then college football needs to set up a system as close to the NFL model as it can get. I mean college football is trying its best to be a baby NFL anyway so everyone may as well try to set up a playoff system as close to the NFL system as possible.

We should have a committee decide the champ. Need more of those.

#1 Either every relevant conference has a “championship” game or none do.

I’d scrap it unfortunately. At this point is going to become an unwanted obstacle before the playoffs, plus without divisions we’re going to have some really messy standings. Ideally I’d like a 9 game conference schedule and reduce the schedule to 11 games. It’d be better for the players and the fans. Of course it won’t happen because of money

Unfortunately the SEC championship game will become a liability with the advent of the 12 team playoff potentially knocking the losing SEC team out of contention or a loss of and an automatic bye..... The revenue is great but the repercussions are negative for the SEC in general

I wish we’d keep divisions.
Makes for a meaningful stretch run for a team that might of started slow or is fading.

College football s a regional game. Specifically it is a southern game.

The price for an SEC championship ticket in the secondary market this year was more than all the other championship games combined.

It will be played in some form.

Everyone should go independent or we need division winners making the playoffs. Scrape the conference championship games.

That's a keeper. Greatest event in college football. It is a playoff game.

Shelve it.

Outside of tv revenue, there’s zero incentive for SEC teams to play in it.

Hypothetical: Imagine #1 Georgia (12-0) and #10 Missouri (10-2) are the top two teams in the conference. They have to play the SECCG. Georgia wins? They gain nothing. Missouri falls out of the 12 team playoff. MAYBE third-in-conference #14 LSU (10-2) slips in.

Missouri wins? They jump to top 8, MAYBE top 4. Georgia loses the first round bye.

(You can finagle the teams, wins/loss records, and rankings how you’d like)

Sure, the SECCG will get a single broadcast with lots of viewers. But what if the SEC had a 9 game conference schedule and ensured every team had a high quality OOC opponent? Would overall ratings be higher?

The SEC will do whatever the TV executives tell them to do. That’s how we got 4 teams that have no business being in the SEC in the first place.
