Yeah, but you've got to factor in that while the three SEC West claimants were beating each other up, that allowed USC to slip in the back door with their wimpy West Coast schedule.

Consensus National Champions in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision Records include the AP Poll (AP), Coaches' Poll (UPI), Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), and the National Football Foundation/College Football Hall of Fame (NFF).

Win anyone of these and you are considered a "Consensus" champion.

Do you think that the pollsters snubbed Ole Miss because of the campus riots that semester? ESPN recently did a documentary on Ole Miss' '62 season, but I didn't see it.

Wikipedia has a nice week-by-week write-up of the '62 season in general, and the pollsters for some reason dropped Ole Miss three times during the season, even though the Rebs had kept on winning: LINK.

Bama was screwed in 66

Perhaps, but Michigan State and Notre Dame were considered the best two teams all year long and they tied. Neither played in a bowl game, and being as these "championships" were voted on before the bowls, Alabama's beatdown of Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl didn't really mean anything.

This is fair enough, given that Alabama benefited from the timing of the AP's vote in both 1964 and 1965. In 1966, they didn't. But that's karma for you. Try crying about this to an Arkansas fan and they'll just laugh at you.

this is a pretty fun June thread.

Think of all the grief Alabama would save themselves if they took down their "1941" flag and put one up for 1966.

No laughter. Only the sound of our tears hitting the ground and the air getting let out of your tires.

Serious bidness.

Well, the "problem" with that is Alabama started off the 1966 season ranked #1. They did nothing on the field to warrant being dropped.Their only close call was an 11-10 win in Knoxville over a very good Tennessee team.

Actually, what solidified the Notre Dame vote was the week following the Michigan State tie. The forerunner to the Pac 8, the American Association of Western Universities, had screwy schedules and by-laws. On the same day ND and Mich State tie, UCLA defeated Southern Cal 14-7. Still, Southern Cal had a 4-1 conference mark while UCLA had a 3-1 mark. The ADs could have selected UCLA has their Rose Bowl representative but chose Southern Cal instead. Notre Dame walloped Southern Cal 51-0 in Los Angeles. That did it,really.

Ironically, in 1964 Southern Cal upset then #1 Notre Dame, 20-17 scoring 20 fourth quarter points after entering the final quarter down 17-0.This moved Alabama to #1 from #2.

As for the bowls, certainly with less than 10 major bowls in 1966 the bowls were viewed as an afterthought. Still, its too at least one poll didn't wait until after the bowls that year. No one made Notre Dame not accept bowls and the Big 10's Rose Bowl only, but no repeat was insane. Michigan State won the Big 10 in 1965 and 1966 but since they went the previous year, runner-up Purdue played Southern Cal in the Rose that year.

Bama could count other years. Bama was voted national champion by the National Championship Foundation in 1945 and 1966. Bama was undefeated and untied both years and also the SEC champion in 1945 and 1966, which I know meets LSU fans' approval.

Alabama went to (and won) the Rose Bowl in 45 after Army turned it down, but the latter got the feel-good title because of WW2 ending.

Truer words have never been spoken.

I wish we had never claimed that year, and now that we do, I wish we'd just let it go. We weren't national champions by any reasonable standard.
