Well, the "problem" with that is Alabama started off the 1966 season ranked #1. They did nothing on the field to warrant being dropped.

Interesting. Thanks for the info 59.

You realize you have LSU to thank for your share of the 1965 title, don't you?

#1 Michigan St. lost to #5 UCLA in the Rose Bowl
#2 Arkansas lost to LSU in the Cotton Bowl.
#4 Alabama beat #3 Nebraska in the Orange Bowl, vaulting them over #1, 2 & 3 for the AP national championship. Bama was the 1965 SEC champ.

So, final AP....
#1 Alabama
#2 Michigan State
#3 Arkansas (only loss to LSU)
#4 UCLA
#5 Nebraska

Why would that be a "problem". Teams dropped all the time. It was nothing unusual.

I don't know, because they had won titles the two previous seasons. Michigan State and Notre Dame tied one another.

That 1966 title was as bad if not worse than the 77 sham. The ND media was in full force then. I honestly believe in 66 we could have BEATEN ND and they would have awarded the Irish the title.
Rocky Bleier said himself Ara had said they couldn't beat Bama that season. Ara knew before the game a tie is all it would take even though we were unblemished.

Sitting in the Superdome on Jan 1 1978 we were trouncing a number 6 or something Ohio State team 38-6. We were number 2 of course. At this time the Cotton and Sugar were played at the same time of day and we kept hearing that No.1 Texas was getting beaten like 34-0 or whatever and we heard it was final and the Superdome went nuts. National Title for 1977. My uncle looked down at me and said they would jump ND from 5 to 1. We left the next morning and in Picayune MS we heard that Notre Dame had indeed won the title. We would have won 3 in a row. Yes we lost by a fg to a great Nebraska team on the road but ND lost to Ole Miss that season. We routed Nebraska to open 78 and went on to win it all but it still didn't take the sting out. Well, we're in position to do it again without the ND voting media who is probably either dead or hiding today. Maybe we can avenge the season that wasn't and dedicate this to the 77 team who was the best in College football that year with the trifecta. It would take some sting off of that.

LSU ended Arkansas' 22 game win streak and shot at back to back titles. So close.

I'm just glad we raped Notre Dame up and down the field and embarrassed their entire following. Joe Theismann, Rocket, and Jerome Bettis were talking so much shite. They had no answer and that was only the first of many things that happened after the NC that royally embarrassed them. Payback's a bitch, stupid Leprechauns

I didn't know about 77. That's exactly how Auburn got screwed in 83.
