I like 12 teams. 8 conference champs, plus 4 at large. Top 4 conference champs get a bye, then use BCS(or something) to seed rest 5-12(regardless of at large or not).

I think this allows the smaller conferences a chance, plus keeps the regular season meaningful, because you want to finish in the top 4 for the bye. Games up to semi's played at the home of the higher seed.

- 8 teams
- 5 conf champions and the 3 highest ranked at larges using the BCS formula
- Rank them 1-8 using BCS formula
- Round of 8 (first 4 games) are played January 1st on top 4 teams campuses
- Round of 4 (2 games) played in rotating BCS bowls on January 7th
- Round of 2 (title game) played in rotating BCS bowl on January 14th

This satisfies playoff need, conference championship importance, timeline for student athletes, brings major money to top 4 teams with onsite games, and still uses the BCS games.

To me, it just seems to be the best way to get the little guys involved. Keeping conference titles meaningful, but still allow a team like 06 LSU, or 11 Bama to prove how good they are. They just have to play an extra game than the SEC champ.

I am with you, when everyone benefits we all benefit and that once in a Generation team from a small school would get to shine

I wish there was some way to push this idea forward. What do we do start an email campaign on Change.Org

I agree, except you got the at-large bids wrong.

They should be selected from the champions of the remaining FBS conferences (not sure where you got "FBS Div II" from, Div II is not FBS):

AAC
CUSA
MAC
MWC
Sun Belt

The top 3 champions of these conferences based on SOS should fill the last three spots.

No 'wildcard', no 'bye', a straight up tournament of champions. You don't win your conference championship, you don't advance.

Minimal controversy.

So let teams schedule cream puffs an still allow them in with a loss?

What don't you like about the current system?

This would be a HELL of a lot better than the current system, which imo shouldn't even be called a "playoff".

As stated above, any "perfect" system has to mean that every team has an opportunity to win it all, but not with a drastically easier schedule. So there must be conference realignment and/or purging some teams from D-1 if there is ever to be anything near a "perfect" playoff.

Definitely think we go to an 8 team playoff within a few years. Some version of 5 Conference Champs + 3 at large bids.

It will take three weeks to complete. I can't see playing all three games after Christmas due to the conflicts with academics and the NFL. Would the first round be played in December after exams, with the final two rounds played after Christmas?

Sorry, I can't agree with this; I want the best teams in the playoffs and if a particular conference is weak in a given season, you end up not having the best teams. However, I believe that's pretty much we are going to have with this playoff selection committee. The selection committee members are going to be instructed to disregard the polls so even if say Auburn and Alabama are #1 and #4 in the polls, there will be only one SEC team in the playoffs, bank on it. The committee WILL be biased toward the conference champions and since the Big 12 doesn't have a conference championship, they will be the odd man out all other factors being pretty equal. I promise you the other conferences NEVER EVER want to see another all SEC championship.

I'm an LSU fan first, but VCU's FF run was more special, than LSU's. Basically because we were a small school from the CAA.
Oddly enough I was in Richmond for the LSU FF run, and New Orleans for VCU's.

How else do you decide the best teams if not by conference champions?

I thought the whole reason behind a playoff was to get rid of the opinion poll approach to picking a champion.

Either a play off OR a poll, NOT both.

No. Just no.

They should just take the top 16 teams in AP ranking.
Pair them off.
Play each game at the higher seed's location until you reach the finals.
Each round everyone is paired so the higher seeds always go against the lower seeds. (ie no bracket)
The final 2 teams play at whatever bowl that year hosts the national championship.

So if the playoffs started this week round 1 would be.....

Notre Dame vs Florida State
Ole Miss vs Alabama
USC vs Oregon
Stanford vs Oklahoma
LSU vs Auburn
UCLA vs Georgia
Baylor vs Michigan State
Texas A&M vs Ohio State

Great. So we sit through 19 years of Bama 58 - Towson 7 for that one game instead of 20 years of competitive games.

Ok, I'll start it, help me word it. Should we use your original wording or fix it up a bit?

Why the AP ranking?

Wouldn't using any poll for selection introduce more bias?

Isn't the whole point of a playoff to remove as much bias as possible?

People don't seem to want a fair play off system, they just want a system that gives their team the best chance to get in.

Considering my propensity to butcher the English language, fix it up.

So, you are opposed to the playoff systems that the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. have been using for decades?

I'd rather see the playoffs limited only to conference champs. Seed them #1 to #8 based on a BCS-like formula, higher seeds host the lower until the championship. Would only take three games, which even with a 12-game regular season and a conference championship, only two teams would play in as many games as the worst NFL teams play in every regular season.

I've been advocating this kind of playoff for years, maybe one day we'll get there.
