No one outside the SEC knows that's a bigger rivalry than Bama/LSU or LSU/Florida.

I guess that's why the rivalry with UT is recognized as one of the best OOS rivalries. AU/UGA is the only rivalry that could rival the UA/UT rivalry. Bama will not give up the AU or UT game and neither will the other schools. Do you think AU would give up the UA or UGA game?

What if LSU were to asked to give up their rivalry games?....oh wait...nevermind

It's too bad all of this didn't go down 4 years ago when Alabama was still in the shitter.

The Tide is as annoying and sanctimonious as the Longhorns. I really don't want us to get Texas in our conference b/c having to deal with Alabama/Birmingham SEC officials is hard enough.

We would go Independent before doing that.

The Alabama athletic program would become irrelevant if they went independent. Let's face it, any school in the SEC who would be stupid enough to go independent would be committing suicide.

West
Alabama
Arkansas
Auburn
LSU
Miss St.
Ole Miss
Texas A&M

East
Florida
Georgia
Georgia Tech
Kentucky
South Carolina
Tennessee
Vanderbilt

Texas A&M and Georgia Tech get permanently paired up. I would expect Texas A&M to improve if they split from Texas as they can market themselves as the Texas SEC school. Georgia Tech has been solid and it would be cool to brin them back in. Everyone keeps their permanent match up and one rotating opponent.

You act like only Bama would have a problem with losing rivalry games. I'm sure Auburn would gleefully give up the longest running rivalry in the South with Georgia?

You don't understand the passion because LSU has NO rivalries.

I'd rather expand like we did last time, one from each side...A&M and somebody like Virginia Tech would be epic.

It was an off the collar remark but what I was trying to say is that Bama will not stop playing TENN period.

Agreed. There is no way AU, UA, UGA, and UT are going to give up 2 of the best historic rivalries in the SEC.

As a UGA fan who has lived all over the country, I agree with the LSU guy--no one knows or really cares outside of UT/Bama about that rivalry. People around the country do know about UGA/UF and UA/AU. They sort of know AU/UGA, but again that rivalry is really only huge to the schools involved.

1. I've heard the "Bama will leave the SEC" stuff before on message boards if bama can't get their way.

2. Someone once posted a thread asking why people hate Alabama - this is one big reason: it appears the SEC revolves around Alabama. Oklahoma and Nebraska gave up their rivalry for the sake of a new conference, why can't bama and tenn do it?

Yeah. And that worked out great. Now they're both going to different conferences.

I personally hate this conference expansion. But I can live with it and ignore it for the most part. But if you were to remove the Bama/UT rivalry, I would stop paying attention to college football because it would officially be all about the money.

Its called progress.

No one outside of Alabama and Tenn really cares about that rivalry, unlike the alabama vs auburn rivalry that everyone enjoys.

Really? In the country? This doesnt even make my top 25. Maybe in the SEC and that is still stretching it.

don't sell rivalries short

I started out with no emotional attachment to games like WSU/washington and Oregon/OSU - the raw emotion in the stadium and on the field sets them apart

So now I tape those games and watch them too

Rivalry games are a win/win - good for tradition and good for money making reasons

That is not the reason they failed though. They failed because of the self-centered, strong arming of Texas leaving Nebraska feeling cheated. I don't want Alabama to be THAT school. I would love to keep all rivalries in tact, if at all possible. If it takes realignment or something, then so be it. But if holding on to them is to the detriment of the league, then something has to change.

I admit, I initially thought that it wouldn't work out to keep them if we expanded. But I may have been too hasty in coming to that conclusion. I've seen some ideas that would work. It does seem like it would be harder if we went to 16 teams, but I still think there are good ideas to keep these games going.

I've seen lists like that. Most of those lists include rivalries like Cal-Stanford. That's when I know the author is more interested including everyone than actually listing the biggest rivalries.

If the league expands, will the Gumps give up the annual games with Tennessee or Auburn. They are the reason we have the stupid permanant opponent rule. SEC West LSU, UT, A&M, OM, MSU, Ark, Bama or Aub.

They could easily split it 4 ways to where Bama could easily get their way:

SEC West
SEC Plains: Texas, A&M, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State
SEC Delta: Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss, and MSU

SEC East
SEC Central: Alabama, Auburn, Vanderbelt, and Tennessee
SEC Atlantic: Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida

I don't want the expansion, but Alabama could easily keep their rivals.
