Excellent post. There is a line in the sand that clearly divides the contenders and the pretenders in this league.

Anything can happen in one given game, even one given season... but cumulative numbers speak for themselves.

Florida gives the "Other 8" hope that a program can climb up into the upper group.

AP Top 25 Finishes for Florida:

1952- #15
----------
1957- #17
1958- #18
1959- #19
1960- #14
----------
1969- #14
----------
1974- #15
----------
1983- #6
1984- #3
1985- #5
----------

Their resume looked very similar to the resumes today for the programs of Arkansas, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Missouri, etc.

Then 1990 came around and Florida embarked on 12 consecutive Top 25 finishes (10 of which were Top 10 finishes). Later came five more consecutive Top 13 finishes (2005-2009) which also included 2 National Titles.

Similar bursts of excellence were enjoyed by Miami and Florida State in the 1980s/1990s.

So here is a message of hope to all the lesser programs out there: All you need is a population explosion in your state coupled with the hiring of a legendary coach on par with Spurrier, Bowden, etc., and you might jump up into the upper echelon.

Bryant talked about how the state was a sleeping giant late in his career (thanks to the population shift that started after WW2). They just needed the coaching.

And the beautiful thing about it is that those other six teams have zero chance of ever cracking into the Big Six. Just nip at their heels every once and a while.

It does a good job of showing how well teams have performed in the past 6 years though.

Yes, from 0 wins in 1979 to 3 top 10 finishes '83-'85, there is a path from historical irrelevance to noteriety.

"Pell did not finish the 1984 season with the team, however. Due to reports of serious recruiting and other NCAA rule violations committed by Pell and his staff, he announced in August 1984—a month before the start of the season—that he would retire at the end of the season. But when school officials received an official list of 107 alleged major infractions from the NCAA in mid-September, university president Marshall Criser fired Pell, effective immediately"

Just change a date or two and a name here or there and it sounds a lot like recent news.

Alabama and Tennessee will never be caught as far as all-time wins is concerned.

Alabama... you are probably correct. Tennessee is very likely to be "caught" in the coming decades.

Based on the past 10 years...

*Georgia could pass Tennessee in all-time wins in just 12.7 seasons
*LSU could pass Tennessee in all-time wins in just 15.2 seasons

While Tennessee football is not likely to maintain its current dreadful status, even if you base it on the previous 40 years, Georgia could still pass the Vols in all-time wins within 49 seasons. While that's a long time, its fairly likely that the next generation will see UT passed by other SEC programs in all-time wins.

The Neyland generation is passing further and further into the past.

29.4%- Tennessee (46-118-11)

25.0%- Georgia (39-121-4)

I found the error, LSU is 50-129-7, not 50-219-7.

Carry on...

National Championships since 1950
According to: AP, and/or: UPI, BCS, FWAA

Alabama: 11

Florida: 3
LSU: 3

Auburn: 2
Tennessee: 2

Georgia: 1
Ole Miss: 1
Arkansas: 1

The SEC had 7 consecutive national champions from 2006 through 2012, 8 of the last 10, and 9 of the last 13.

From the CFB Trivia site...

All current SEC team's all-time record against FINAL ranked AP Top 25 opponents (all games):

46.4%- Alabama
36.7%- Tennessee
36.1%- Florida
34.0%- Auburn
33.4%- LSU
31.3%- Georgia
-----------------
24.2%- Ole Miss
24.1%- Arkansas
21.4%- Texas A&M
18.6%- S. Carolina
16.5%- Missouri
12.8%- Mississippi State
9.3%- Kentucky
7.9%- Vanderbilt

The gap between #2 Tennessee and #6 Georgia is just 5.5%.
The gap between #6 Georgia and #7 Ole Miss is 7.0%

Big 6 indeed.

Oh please.

The other members of the "Big 6" (excluding Bama) trying to act like they are in the same league as Bama is worse than the non "Big 6" members acting like they should be grouped with the "Big 6".
