Number of weeks being ranked #1 in the AP Poll is purely political.
The data linked below hasn't been updated for this past season yet.

The AP weighs weeks ranked #1 very heavily. Alabama is fifth in total weeks ranked at #1.
That's a pretty silly metric.
That means that Notre Dame gets more points for 2012 than Alabama (as they spent a good chunk at #1) than Alabama does, the team that beat them for the title.
It wasn't uncommon for Alabama to win titles in which they were rarely ranked #1 during the course of the season (2011, 2012, 2009 and 2015 all come to mind as recent examples - 3 because we had one loss during the regular season while those that remained #1 were going undefeated until Alabama defeated them, and 2009 because Florida and Alabama were both undefeated the entire time - same with 1992, but with Miami staying at #1).
Yup - two seasons of recent titles where Alabama went undefeated but remained #2 for most of the season until beating the team that was above them much later into it. Beating both pretty soundly, actually.

I have a hard time accepting that a team with 5 national titles is ahead of a team with 10 national titles because they were "ranked #1 at some point" more times.
I agree. The AP is trying way too hard with this. Where a team is ranked DURING the season means absolutely nothing if they end the year unranked. The easiest way to do this is to take only the FINAL AP rankings and give out 25 points for each 1st place finish, 24 points for each 2nd place, etc.
Do that, it it looks like this:
1. Oklahoma
2. Alabama
3. Ohio State
4. Michigan
5. Notre Dame
6. USC
7. Nebraska
8. Texas
9. Tennessee
10. Penn State
11. LSU
12. Florida State
13. Auburn
14. Georgia
15. Miami
16. UCLA
17. Florida
18. Michigan State
19. Arkansas
20. Clemson
21. Texas A&M
22. Washington
23. Ole Miss
24. Wisconsin
25. Georgia Tech
By doing it this way, here are how each of the SEC team differs from the convoluted rankings the AP put out this morning:
**Bama gains 2 spots (moves from #4 to #2)
**LSU stays even at #11
**Tennessee gains 5 spots (moves from #14 to #9)
**Auburn gains 2 spots (moves from #15 to #13)
**Georgia gains 2 spots (moves from #16 to #14)
For the most part, the big SEC programs are being undervalued by whatever method the AP is using in these evaluations. The only program that bucks that trend is Florida.... who actually falls back 7 spots by focusing more on FINAL rankings.
This method that the AP is using obviously puts far less weight on how a team finishes and far more weight on where a team ranks during the year... which is often very far off from accurate do to preseason hype.

Which makes sense as SEC teams only started getting fair or favorable treatment in the AP poll starting about the time Florida started figuring out football.

Considering our epic failure run in 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2016, I'm surprised we're still in the top 20.

So we're #2 in AP titles among SEC programs despite not being worth a shite before 1990. Interesting.

Except the last category of Big Four Bowls is slanted against Ohio State and Michigan. Only one team in the Big Ten went to a bowl game until 1976.

We all know that's not true. AP has been very kind to the South on plenty of occasions.
Not over the entire history of the AP poll. Over half of Alabama's total weeks at #1 are under Saban. Yet, only four of the ten AP titles are under Saban.
