The only plausible explanation is that Manti is gay. I also think his dad was aware that he was gay and this fake gf was the cover story they came up with. There really isn't any other explanation for his dad saying she often visited the family and Manti in Hawaii. I've even seen quotes stating that Manti's dad talked to her family on the day she died.
Manti certainly didn't need a fake gf, when he could be slayin poon all over the ND campus, but if you're the star lb, I doubt you would want it out there that you were gay.

So, at the BEST case scenario, if they new that she wasn't his girlfriend but he thought this chick that he thought he was friends with from the internet had cancer, he told everyone that it was his girlfriend and made up this story for the attention.
Then, Karma came and bit him in the arse because the story he embellished for his own personal gain ended up being with a fake girl that made him look like a fool.
Don't know if it's been posted, but some Notre Dame chick wrote a blog about it saying that everyone around campus knew that hooked up with girls even though his "love of his life" internet girlfriend had just died of cancer.

Yeah, if there weren't all these quotes attributed to his dad meeting her, and talking to the her family, and things like she was gonna be our daughter in law, then it would make it easier to believe Manti was just duped. It's way too complex to just write this all off as being the victim of a sick joke. For those too lazy to click the link, an alum set up a fundraiser for cancer research in the GF's name two days after the BCS title game. No big deal until you get to this part: Notre Dame took notice of Tudesco's tweets about the fund drive and sent a university videographer to shoot an interview with him. The video was posted on the Notre Dame athletics YouTube channel Tuesday.
They knew the day after Christmas and still did this two days ago.
The gun can't smoke any more. They all knew the whole time.

Even if you believe every word they say, him and ND were still perpetuating the lie after December 26 all the way up and through the Bama game, confirming the story and allowing the media to continue to run with the story even when, by their own version, knew it was a lie. So in my eyes, it almost doesn't matter how the facts fall out, him and ND weren't suckers that got duped. They at times actively and at other times passively perpetuated this lie with the build up to the national championship game.

Every time I see that clip of Kelly giving him the game ball after the Michigan State game, I think that it's odd that players had an idea that it was fake and their coach made the sweet media moment in the locker room. It all just fit so perfectly into the media story everyone was spinning, and I wonder when people at Notre Dame suspected something was off too.
And the dad was totally involved. You can't tell me that a man who wanted to blacklist the newspaper for a picture that showed him missing a tackle didn't have a hand in the media's love story.

I think more than anything it puts to bed that he is this innocent socially naive retarded person who believes good exists in all.
I can see an explanation that doesn't involve being gay, if he thought he would get more attention. He wouldn't have made the #2 Heisman just with his grandmother. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if he was gay either.
