i guess you don't know memphis very well. there are several reasons your statement is wrong. memphis and east tennessee are not the same state i don't give a damn what your geopraphy teacher said.

You just have a bunch of scholly's to give...but before you get mad...so did A&M last year and so we were in the top 10. But by average star ranks we weren't. Hopefully the numbers pan out and some of the kids surprise.
The kicker will be the next couple of classes... they'll likely be smaller than this one so you've got to get better stars and then develop them well.

I do feel that high school football in Tennessee is on the rise though.
I don't think this is the case. What's happening is that UT football is so bad it makes the HS talent better.

But we know why the Collapse has happened. Florida has scared all good coaches away from Tennessee. Tennessee calls, the coach ask if they still have to play UF yearly. Tennessee says, "well...yea". Then the coach hangs up. This post was edited on 9/23 at 11:41 pm
I hope this didn't catch any fish....

I was listening to Bill King the other day and had some recruiting guru on and they guy just said something to the tune of "As you know Bill, the State of Tennessee simply doesn't have that many blue chip football recruits, which is going to make it that much harder for UT to rebuild." My question is has this always been true or is this a recent issue? If so what is the cause? If this has always been the case how was UT so good for so long? Did it require a lot of out of state players back in its glory days, because I thought they were loaded with Tennessee boys back then but maybe I am wrong. Has there been a population shift or something, or did UT always have to have lots of out of state talent to survive? Or maybe this is not true at all.

This collapse is a function of a lot of things. Recruiting is a component, but it isn't the only one.
It is true that Tennessee historically has limited in-state talent. However, as others have pointed out, it's not like Knoxville is a long way from other talent-rich areas, and the idea that Tennessee lacks a natural recruiting base is mostly a myth.
One of the big contributors to this collapse is Fulmer's developing apathy. He had a real chance to take over the SEC when Spurrier left in 2001, and he mostly squandered that opportunity. Couple that with the fact that he had to go against a league that was beginning to attract more high-quality head coaches, and Fulmer seemingly refused to adapt the way he needed to. The writing was on the wall for many by the end of the 2002 season.
Additionally, a couple of Prince Phillip's highly ranked recruiting classes ended up busting in a bad way. I don't know if that's a function of poor development or if they were just overrated, but that caused a major blow to our depth. Kiffin's class, nominally good, was rife with attrition and ended up largely as a lost year.
And then you have the Dooley Experiment. I don't completely fault Derek Dooley for where we are (he took a high profile job and did his best), but the sheer incompetence of our administration's handling of the football program from 2005 onward, plus really high quality coaches entering or re-entering the league (Spurrier, Miles, Saban, Richt, Meyer, etc.), plus lackadaisical recruiting efforts spelled nothing short of unmitigated disaster.
Lots on here like to mock Butch Jones's "brick by brick" campaign, but it really is what the program is going to have to do: start over.

They just average the top 20 recruits in each class. So, numbers have nothing to do with it.

Ok thanks for info.
I know Memphis is not UT territory per say, they are a hour from Ole Miss, and there is definitely an East Tennessee-West Tennessee thing just like a North versus South Louisiana or Mississippi thing.
In sum, the Rant is saying they cant just do it with Tennessee players since the cant lock down Memphis, and the rise of Ole Miss, Alabama and USCe all hurt recruiting at UT. I assume Vandy too. and Florida by just existing.
And it is Fulmer's fault for being a lazy sob, and all the bad hires afterwards have made it much worse.
And finally, UT is joining LSU in contributing to the Texas fundraising effort to hire Nick Satan.

Whatever the reason I know this. I sat in Legion, Neyland and BDS for all those beatdowns from 95-07 and this has been friggin great. They put 10 out of 12 on us during that span and most weren't close.
Franchione said it best after his first third saturday, "when I looked across the field I thought, I wish those were my players" . I remember leaving BDS that game after we got thumped and thought the same.

Always been the case, Memphis might be their best instate recruiting base for all sports, but Ole Miss and Ms. State have done a decent job of getting talent from there.
The difference between now and then is Tennessee isn't able to go into the Carolinas and Georgia and take who they want to supplement the lack of instate talent.

Nashville has passed Memphis in terms of quality football talent.

it is positioned best geographically in the SEC. It borders 6 SEC states(MO, ARK, MISS, BAMA, GA & KY) and is close to 2 others (SC & LA)
UT is not close to any part of Louisiana. The State of Tennessee is fairly close, but it's the other end of the state, and it's a very long state.

Didn't say only football.
Memphis still produces excellent basketball talent that would still flee the state had Memphis State not hired Cal after he failed in the NBA.

Part of me wants to believe it, wants to believe Tenn is dead. But I have a feeling that its temporary.
And don't get offended Tenn fans its nothing personal. It would just be nice to see someone fall out of the ranks of the elite, as it would prove social mobility in college football.

Price never coached a game and as for Shula I doubt the fact that some players were getting text books free for their friends had any bearing on how well they did that year
