So, Fulmer, Kiffin, Dooley in the last 7 years for TN and they want to pull the Plug on another coach.
These type of reports are not going to sit well with some coaching prospects.

Tenn made a good hire with Hart. He'll get a good Bama guy in there to win alot of games, yet still lose to us.

Why is it always Arkansas fans saying that Dooley deserves more time and Tennessee can't compete for a coach?

Why this fascination with Gruden? He ran the Tampa Bay franchise into the ground. And for this legendary QB guru (I mean, he'll, he has his own television show with college QBs, after all) can anyone name me a QB that Gruden developed? A QB at Tampa that got better under Gruden's tutelage?

Wow, the first time I've agreed with you.
I lived in Tampa during his time there. He was awful. His resume is lame if you ask me. UT is being trolled anyway IMO.

How in the world is a buyout for someone like Dooley $5M??
So, it's a confluence of a few factors. The first and perhaps more important is that Tennessee was a dumpster fire after Kiffin left. We're still not in very good shape, obviously, but we at least have some talent and depth. Major issue at this point seems to be coaching.
But anyway, Hamilton reached out to numerous people who refused to bite, including Muschamp, who turned down what was apparently a $3.5 million offer. A big part of the reason was the rightly perceived difficulty of pulling Tennessee back up, given the barren (at the time) roster and the fact that they were competing in the SEC. The Tennessee job is difficult even IF the roster is loaded because of the recruiting disadvantages and the fact that they are competing against teams like Florida, Georgia, and Alabama every year. The contract was drawn in such a way as to make the Tennessee job appealing, but even to many of the top candidates, it simply wasn't. Dooley's buyout is monstrous as a result.
The other thing is that Mike Hamilton's contract-drawing abilities leave a lot to be desired. Kiffin was able to waltz out of Knoxville without much of a dent to his pocketbook, and he found a loophole allowing Monte Kiffin to leave with him and owe nothing. Hamilton wanted to make sure the penalties for doing such a thing would be stepper; at the same time, the price for doing that is, in part, making the terms of the contract very beneficial to the head coach, as well.

I think Taggart is on his way up -- fast. But my fear is he would be another risky hire, and I'm not sure Tennessee can afford to make such bets. Who knows? Taggart may be destined to win the big one...but if he comes to Tennessee and doesn't do well, we're right back where we started.
