Below are the reasons why he is getting a raise. It is the tangible progress he has made.
Progress defined.
1. forward or onward movement toward a destination.
If the goal is an undefeated season someday then would below not 100% be an example of progress?

He's made progress in every area from where we've been the past 7 years. Unless you aren't paying attention to our program I wouldn't expect you to notice it.
But he has built the foundation needed for us to be ready to compete for championships again next year and beyond.

Butch is doing big things like wasting a time out on a review that had no chance so he could lose the game. Butch is the same type of game manager as les miles.
And don't underestimate his evaluation skills.
It only took multiple injuries before he inserted current GOAT / future unanimous SEC MVP, AstroDobbs.

UF made a mistake giving Muschamp a raise and extension in his second year hince the 6.8 million UF is paying him not to coach at UF.
Muschamp went 11-2 and a BCS bowl. Butch will go 7-6/6-7 and the Gator bowl.

Worth every penny of that 3.6 million

6-6 coach gets a raise??

I guess you posted that for me? Look, I think he's done a decent job on the field and recruited very well, but using Dooley as a measuring stick of progress isn't a very good idea.
Im not saying he's an awful coach or anything, I just don't like the extension/raise and I understand I'm probably in the minority. I don't think mediocrity should be rewarded.

Right now, Jones is the Sumlin of the East. Got a huge raise, without doing a ton. Both coaches are bringing in great recruiting classes, and unfortunately for both schools were hot names for other jobs. I understand you have to pay to prevent the coach from leaving, but raising a coach who hasn't finished a regular season better than .500 at UT is not something I would do if I could help it at all.

Link or any sort of proof?
Dave Hart: Michigan never contacted him about Butch Jones. He said no other school contacted him, either.

I guess that settles it then, thanks for the link.

2 year extension to 2020 and raise from 3M to 3.6Million.
3.6 mil for what at best will be a 7 win season, and with a loss UT's 5th straight losing season. How the mighty have fallen.

After Mullen gets a raise this offseason, which I am sure he will, Butch will still be in the bottom 1/4th in SEC compensation...we have to stay competitive within the market or Butch could get disgruntled and we could find ourselves in a bidding war with Michigan if their search ever had zeroed in on Butch.

Why would Michigan pay 3.6 mil a year for butch jones?

Because in his 8 years as a head coach at the FBS level he's won or tied for 4 conference titles, has a solid winning record and has proven he can recruit at an elite level.
It isn't hard to see that he's about to win very big at Tennessee over the next 5 years.
But you all can have one more offseason to hope he isn't.

He barely got to 6 wins this year off a top 10 class. That's pretty weak.

Starting 9 true freshman and playing 24. Also replacing every OL and DL starter. Also facing a top 5 schedule.
We return 40 of our 44 in our two deep going into the bowl game.
If we don't win 8 or more next year, you'll have an argument. As of now he has OVERACHIEVED.
There is a reason 90% of preseason magazines/websites had us at 4-8 or 5-7.

The state of the program when he arrived was god awful. The fact he even got us to a bowl game is remarkable. Saban couldn't have done much better with the talent that we have on this team. The O line is the worst in the country and we started 23 freshman.

In Sabans second year he took a team recruited by Mike Shula short of 85 scholarship players due to NCAA sanctions to the SECCG.
