1) Left more talent (recruited much better than dooley)

2) 9-4 seasons much better than 5-7

3) Snapped losing streaks to florida and georgia

Of course I'll admit it. He was the right man to rebuild the program and I'll always respect him for that, but he isn't the coach to take us to the next level

Jones is not a good coach, but fact of the matter is it's not easy to win at TN by any stretch. They are 3rd in their division, and 6th or 7th in the SEC in terms of ease to sustain a championship caliber program. Nonetheless, if they get the right guy they can get to that level again.

Of course. That's not really in question.

- Tennessee was a mediocre football program from 2005-2009.

- Tennessee was a dumpster fire from 2010-2013.

- Tennessee has been a mediocre football program from 2014-Present.

Butch Jones has done nothing more than got them back to square one. It's what they do next that counts for everything. If they make the wrong hire they could quickly descend back into dumpster fire status.

Absolutely. The next coach will inherit a far better situation than what Butch inherited from Dooley.

I'll admit that. He did pretty good considering what he took over. Did some great recruiting and that will leave the pantry pretty well stocked for the next guy. Tennessee and the SEC is too much for Butch...he will never be a championship coach at this level. He did what he could but at this level and getting the money he is getting, that is well short of what is expected.

^^This. The job was simply too much for him. CBJ worked his arse off at UT (no one questions that) and did almost everything right off the field and even some good on the field. BUT the job is too big for him. He plateaued in 2015 and the pressure has been too much for him -- he's taken steps backward because of it.

I think he'd be a fantastic coach at a P5 school like Vanderbilt or Purdue or at lower levels but CBJ can't handle the press or the pressure. He melted under it all and was a better gameday coach when he arrived than he is now. He needs to coach somewhere where there's a lot less heat and expectations. He'd do well there.

It's true, but he is reversing the work he has done and must go.

Yeah, I’ll admit he did better than one of the worst coaches of all time, all sports included.

He’s still arguably the worst coach in the SEC.

Saw this on CBS Sports

This could spell the end for coach Butch Jones, but before you punch his ticket out the door, you'll want to hear what the team at GoVols247 has to say. They've been covering UT athletics for almost 20 years and know the pulse of Rocky Top. They've tapped into their sources to find out where Jones stands.

They know Tennessee athletic director John Currie doesn't want the Vols to be the test case for how a coaching change before December's early signing period affects a program long term.

The early signing period is when student athletes can sign their National Letter of Intent and shape the future of a program. Previously, high school seniors who were not enrolling early had to wait until February of their senior year to sign. Would high-caliber players want to come to Rocky Top while the team is in flux?

GoVols247 also knows Currie is in his first year on the job. He spent a decade in Knoxville before taking the top gig at Kansas State, but this is his first crack at being an athletic director in Knoxville. He hasn't had a chance to get his feet wet and already the spotlight is on him.

Currie might not have seen the maelstrom coming. According to GoVols247, he was a little surprised at the blowback after the heartbreaking, last-second loss at Florida and the lackluster performance against UMass. And that was before a 41-0 shutout at the hands of Georgia -- Tennessee's most lopsided loss in Neyland Stadium history.

Currie took this job with the intent of firing a Butch. That much I know.

Absolutely!

Bring a good coach and we will be okay. The program is stable, and there is a lot of individual talent.

Just need someone who can mold it into a team.

Oregon State has a coaching vacancy, I think he'd do well there
