Our offense is struggling to move the ball against our defense, which I think will be a common theme for Ole Miss opponents. Our likely starting RG tore his labrum in a boxing match in the locker room.

Actual boxing match with gloves, not a fight.

Only thing I disagree with is Powell over McMillan at LB - supposedly Choppa Dan has quit having mental lapses often and is showing the athleticism that made him a highly sought after recruit.

Good write up.

Already lots of good AU info above...I would add only this. Those that have said that that it will take a couple of years for the new D to really take hold and improve, are mistaken. This defense is going to be dramatically better. From bottom 3 to top 4 in the SEC. It's hard to imagine Gus not putting a quality offensive product on the field on the other side of the ball...and if so, watch out.

Punters suck. I would **** an old drunk midget for JK Scott

QB is an unknown. Barnett has gotten a lot of praise but he's a true freshman. Coker is obviously a bust so Cornwell may get he job by default.

Defense will be comparable to the 2011 unit, I think. You won't recognize our secondary this year, from all accounts they have finally put it all together.

And the hype on Minkah Fitzpatrick is unreal. I can't remember the last DB that Saban has gone out of his way to praise as much as he has with Minkah.

you really think Auburn will have a top 4 defense in the conference? How/why?

I think top 4 is reaching, even though the talent is there. Maybe top half... which will suffice with Malzahn's offense.

QB- Mauk is still having consistency issues. Might just be who he is at this point. Starting to worry me. We need better play. True FR Drew Lock had an outstanding first scrimmage. Drew a ton of praise from everyone in attendance.

RB- RH is highly underrated. He's rock solid, and has added 10lbs in the offseason. Depth is still a question behind him. Witter is not impressive. Steward is still recovering from injury and Abbington has not gained much traction.

WR/TE- light on experience, but a lot of talent here. This spot is quickly becoming a strength for us. Lots of playmakers.

OL- after some position shuffling it looks like they are settling in on spots. Lots of experience and a couple sure fire Sunday guys. Should be a strength.

DL- light on numbers and experience here. Got hit with a ton of attrition. It's concerning. Harris looks ready to be our next star though.

LB- Deep, talented, experienced . Should be a big strength.

DB- Same as above.

ST- returning kicker, true FR punter (maybe). Losing Murphy was a big hit. Not set on return men yet.

Harris still learning but our Oline is going to maul teams and create massive holes for our stable of 5 star backs

Wrs are tops in all of CFB

Our Defense is faster than ever and we will be sacking QBs every game thanks to an upgrade in coaching at DL/DC

Best Alabama team in 40 years. No matter the QB we gonna win it all. Just trot out there, and win. Easy as pie. Hello to the haters, cuz we here to stay. Lol.

Just kidding.

I just hope we bring that lunch box this year. Please.

I think towards the middle of the season Dupre will have won back that edge starting position. He's too dominant and consistent not to be on the field in the 2 wr sets. My theory that chark jumping him is more because of how good he does in practice. When the game starts however Dupre is one of those guys you need on the field, especially if the game's on the line.

Dural and Chark have a similar skill set too, being vertical speed. Dupre is more of a possession, deep crossing route WR. Diarse is a physical guy who can play across the middle leaving Tyron Johnson and Quinn as the slot/underneath guys.

Maybe LSU posters will believe me now that I say Dupre will be in the slot...

The Advocate Aug 18, 2015

"Dupre has, at times, moved into the role of a slot receiver, the inside spot where John Diarse and Trey Quinn played last season. When LSU is in a three-receiver set, the Tigers are expected to have D.J. Chark and Travin Dural on the outside and Dupre in the slot.

It gives LSU three speedy, athletic and talented players in different locations on the field at one time. It gives the defense trouble, especially with Dupre aligned toward the center of the field.

He caught both of his touchdowns in LSU’s spring game while lined up in the slot."

I would like to add to that statement that he showed a propensity to catch the short 10 yd cross pattern from the slot that Juice Landry made a living on at LSU...

Dupre in the slot is schematic common sense with the addition of another burner outside in Chark. This helps the LSU running game as much as anything.

D Guice is a flat game-changer at rb. Better watch your arse on the swing pass with him and Fournette in the lineup.

Beckwith better stay healthy or...

First, the DL is destroying the OL every day, 1 on 1, in practice. McKenzie, Phillips, and Barnett all seem especially dominant. That being said, I only have confidence in 3 of our OL, Kerbyson, Roberson, and Kendrick. I do think the DL will be ridiculous... I just hope the OL can get to average or a little above. OL will feature 3 true freshmen in the 2-deep. Looks to be the only liability position-wise. WRs look great, especially sophomore Josh Malone. Preston Williams and Juan Jennings seem like they will be the real deal. North is banged up. Enough depth and talent at the position to withstand injuries though. QB - Dobbs looks to be stronger and more accurate throwing the football. CBJ finally has confidence in a QB going into the season. Dormady, true EE freshman, is firmly planted as the 2nd stringer. He is big, deceptively athletic, and has a great arm. We really need Dobbs to stay healthy though. RB - Hurd and Kamara will both be great. Problem is, there doesn't appear to be anyone very impressive behind them. Very little depth, but Hurd, at 242 lbs, will punish opposing LBs and DBs. Kamara possesses speed that UT hasn't seen at RB since LaMarcus "Cocaine" Coker. DE - Barnett, Maggitt, and Phillips will be ridiculous. Barnett is unblockable one on one. Phillips, though only a freshman, has the coaches raving about his talent and work ethic. Fortunately, there will be a 3rd and long package implemented that will allow 4 DEs on the field at once to rush the passer. DT - Tennessee hasn't had talent and depth at DT like this in a decade. It will feature a 6 man rotation: O'Brian, McKenzie, Tuttle, Mixon, Vickers, and Williams. McKenzie claims to be at 330, but his teammates all say he is 350+. Stripling says he is raw, but he's never seen a DT like him before. In totality the DL will undoubtedly be the strength of this team. LB - UT will run a base 4-2-5, so it will primarily feature 2 LBs... JRM is fantastic, but there is just a lot of young talent behind him. Freshman Darren Kirkland Jr. and RS Freshman Dillon Bates will likely get the start at MLB. Lot of depth at this position. CB - Cam Sutton will be one of the best in the nation. Justin Martin and Emmanual Moseley are both very talented as sophomores. Moseley has been shutting our WRs down in practice and scrimmage situations, so I'd imagine he starts opposite Sutton. Gaulden, a sophomore, will start at NB. He excels in run support. S - Features a great blend of leadership and talent. Seniors Brian Randolph and LaDarrel McNeil will start, but the rotation will be 4 guys deep. Sophomores Evan Berry and Todd Kelly Jr. will be 2nd string. I think the minutes will be divided up pretty evenly though, as the sophomores appear to be the more talented safeties.

Great summation.

All I could add is that sophomore Ethan Wolf at TE should be very solid. Also, Senior Alex Ellis should be very good as well. Behind them, TE is a question mark.

Make no mistake. MLB is still a huge question mark. We have talent there but Bates is playing out of position and is not the banger in the middle we need, and Kirkland is still a freshman playing QB of the D. I like the competition there but it still worries to think of opposing teams lining up in I or other pro style running schemes. I do think our team is starting to really come together in understanding their roles in a 1 gap defense.
Players who will see their roles expand as the coaches gain more confidence in their ability:
Emmanuel Mosley has gained 40 pounds and is finally not a physical causality at CB. He locked down every Wideout he went against in yesterday's open practice
Todd Kelly Jr. S Will be vital in run coverage and makes a play on the ball at all possible moments.
J. smith is always the firs WR in drills and is really improving his route running.
Kerbyson has finally grown into his LT role. He is routinely stopping our DEs and turns Maggitt around quite a bit.
My list of non contributors last year to playmakers this year are:
Gaulden at nickel
McDowell at will
Vickers at DT hybrid

List of newcomers who look the part:
Kamara at RB (already a leader)
McKenzie...
Kyle Phillips DE is the unsung hero of this class. The MVP of the Army AA game is really impressive
Tuttle DT will get solo blocked which is good news
J. Jennings is really impressing at WR. Maybe 300 yards this year
P. Williams was always making forum headlines during summer workouts
Kirkland: photographic memory and a real thumper who will have rust to knock off before he lives up to the talent

Hidden gems:
Justin Martin is a very confident corner
Vincent Perry is making people understand why Butch gave him an offer.
Ralph David Abernathy will get about 5-10 plays as a third RB. He was coached by Butch at cincy and is a playmaker. He made Louisville look silly.

Final grades:
QB: B+
RB: B
WR: B+
TE: B- (needs depth)
OL: C- (LT and LG are blue chip. The rest are scrubs or unproven freshmen)
DE: A (wouldn't trade anyone's edge rushers for ours)
DT: B (I am confident they will improve but we're still relying on freshmen players with freshmen endurance and experience)
OLB: B+ (I really like JRM and I see McDowell repeating the trend JRM followed)
MLB: C+ (again it's easy to give a higher grade based on talent, but that talent is unproven in a very vital position)
CB: B+ (cam is a top 10 pick next draft, EMosley is improving consistency, Martin is really impressing, and Gaulden will make plays given the opportunity)
S: B+ (i love the combo of experienced seniors and really talented underclassmen in TK and Berry)
K: B+ (medley hit 3 straight from 58 and is proven)
P: who knows? (I've seen out punters hit 65 yarders but I've also seen them hit 35 yarders. Someone needs to stand out)

TL;DR: Tennessee is better, but you still think we suck. I get it. MLB and OL are two of the most vital positions is college football, until they prove themselves, I will definitely not be calling for a 10-2 season.
