But you are kidding yourself if you think Alabama is better than Louisiana.

I'm not saying it is. I'm simply saying that I have spent extensive time in both states and they are both not-so-great.

Outside of New Orleans there isn't much going on in Louisiana. Just like outside Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Dauphin Island there isn't much going on in Alabama. Shreveport is a dump and smells like rotten fish. Birmingham ain't much better. Baton Rouge is a college town whose fun is rivaled by Tuscaloosa.

Without New Orleans there would be nothing worthwhile in Louisiana. Historically, culturally, and economically. Without New Orleans you would be one of the poorest states in the Union. Easily.

The Battle of Horseshoe Bend was the most lopsided battle of the War of 1812 and was fought in Alabama by Andrew Jackson and his men on their way down to New Orleans. Also...the state of Alabama has one of the most famous battles of the American Civil War (Battle of Mobile Bay), a far more memorable and historically important conflict than the War of 1812, as well as the site of one of the most famous quotes in military history ("Damn the torpedoes! Full steam ahead!"). Also...Mobile was the first capital of the French colony of Louisiana. It is older and more historically important than New Orleans. While New Orleans may have the largest Mardi Gras celebration on the continent, Mobile has the oldest.

Alabama also played a big roll in the development of rock & roll - a far more popular musical genre than Jazz. Watch the documentary Muscle Shoals for the inside scoop on that.

So to say Louisiana far outstrips Alabama in terms of cultural and historical importance is very laughable.

I've lived in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Wyoming, and Arkansas for school, work, and personal reasons. I've found great things about all places. But there's plenty of eye sores in every place I've lived too.
