Both fanbases are gonna need to wait and see. We haven't seen Steele against a solid offense yet, and will likely need a year or two to get a good sample size. Plus, his biggest strength is probably his recruiting, so that takes time. By the same token, Chavis has definitely improved their defense, but we will need to the able to see if A&M can recruit in spite of him on that side of the ball. He really fricked us this year for our Front 7.

People looking at final scores have it all wrong.

Steele has done better. Our players are tackling better, forcing more turn overs, and getting more sacks/penetration.

Steele has virtually shut teams out in the first half allowing us to mount a lead and making teams desperate to come back.

I said all along I would rather a top 5 SEC defense that has more turnovers, sacks, critical 3rd down stops, etc than just a SEC that is #1 in yards per game that is skewed from playing cupcakes.. but struggles against spread teams.

One of the TDs this past game was off a turnover that was inside the 5 yard line.. setting up a virtual walk in TD.. not on the D really.

I also look forward to Steele and company recruiting even better players going forward.

Here's what I think people have a hard time understanding.

A&M plays a quick scoring offense which means we are going to win games where our defense is on the field longer than our offense. This is going to translate into a higher total D than others. LSU's offense is a run/pound/control time of possession style. It makes sense that the other team will have less time on the field and thus less yards. Total D is a horrible stat to compare defenses.

I personally think points per yard is better, but it's not perfect. It doesn't take into account field position but it's still miles above comparing two defenses to total D who's offensive's are diametrically different.

Steele is replicating Chavis' work at the same level.

Chavis is putting shine on a turd

No matter what anyone may like to believe, Chavis is a great SEC DC. Is he perfect? No. Does his pholosophy have exploitable weaknesses? Yes. Pretty sure no one has come up with the perfect defense yet.

I am not sold on Steele by any means either. However our defense looked downright NASTY in the first half of our 2 SEC games and then we went to base defense. Not sure what's up with that.

Chavis has a great pair of DEs who can really get after it. The center of the defense, from what i have seen is very soft. Not sure if that is fixable this year.

If you whip out resumes Chavis's is better no doubt.

Time will tell how good of a hire Steele really is. But if i am not mistaken his contract is only 2 years. Seems like we were plugging a hole and hoping a bigger talent surfaces after next season.

Then are you retarded? It's simple. A&M fans had a mantra of "Steel will hurt LSU's defensive performance"

But have we seen that? Nope. He's kept it at the same level and improved our sacks and turnovers

Any competent dc can improve that 2014 A&M defense

Well... Honestly... Having seen us play both, A&M has the better defense.

Granted, that DL has some talent that LSU's doesn't.

You might find out if that is true once Steele loses all of the players coached up by Chavis

or maybe he won't have to coach up as many players because Orgeron will do a better job recruiting guys
