re: Spurrier Unlocked: Saban is a Great Recruiter, Not a Great Coach

Florida State, Texas, USC, Ohio State, Clemson, Miami, UF (currently), and UGA are just a few examples of school's that have recruited well yet have gone long stretches without winning the big game. Where was Florida State from 2001 to 2012? Saban isn't winning just because of talent. If talent was the most important factor, then the school's I listed should have experienced greater success over the past several years instead of being irrelevant or perennial underachievers.

Wow! That's a great post AlaTiger. My hats off to you for an honest, thorough and well written post on this subject.

Yes, we sucked, but Bama and UT were still animals.
Alabama, Tennessee and Florida were the only animals in the conference for the majority of the 1990s. Auburn would rise up for a year or two, Ole Miss would rise up for a year or two, MSU would rise up for a year or two, same with Georgia but the Tide, Vols and Gators were the only three teams that remained fairly consistent throughout the majority of the 90s.

He definitely has a tendency to sit on a lead. With that said, I look for him to run the score up more often this year.

Saban?? I doubt it my friend... I'm not one for completely running up the score on someone, even though I loved it during this massacre:
But NOTHING has led me to believe that Saban would ever run it up under ANY circumstances.

He took last year personally. Along with all the comments on his ability as a coach. He will not give a frick this year. Take the spread.

Saban is probably one of the few coaches in America who truly doesn't care what others think of him... Also we lost those last two games last year because of defense.
I would love to see him open it up but I'd absolutely shocked if he ever did.

I hate to break this to you Charlie Brown, but Saban had Bama at 12-0 in 2008 with one year of his own recruits on hand, that is coaching.
The 2010 Bama vs. Aubie game came down to 2 things, TR3 dropped an easy TD, Mark I. fumbled a ball that tight roped tha sidelhne 20 yards and rolled out of the endzone for a touchback 1. BAD BREAKS. 2. Oue saftey, Barron, didn't tell us he couldn't raise his arm above his shoulder. NOT COACHING.
LSU 2011, Aubie 2013..... FG KICKER......

Oh this'll be good.
Why?

Well, there's some truth to that.

he's a top-5 coach of all time.. and IMO he's probably closer to top-3.
LSU should have absolutely just beaten the breaks off his 2012 squad. That game should not have been close. His charisma and the respect he commands contributed more to his programs success than his coaching did for his teams on the field success IMO. Spurrier doesn't his team back in for a rematch in 2011 under identical schedules and scores.

Please don't tell me you're talking about Spurrier?!?!?!

Yet you don't explain why
When you realize how weak the SEC was in the 1990s, as well as the many times he lost to equal or superior competition, and couple that with the fact that his lone national championship was the result of a fortuitous re-match, you start getting the sense that Spurrier may not be as great as he's cracked up to be.
Spurrier's greatest contribution to the SEC was his offense. By the late-90s, almost everyone was running some variation of it. That's probably why his teams fell off after 1996, with 2001 being the obvious exception.

Honestly, I like Spurrier a lot, and like listening to his potshots at Saban, Tennessee, etc, but he's really starting to sound a bit insecure rather than snarky. I'm wondering if he's worried that his legacy is already being eclipsed.

Spurrier great troll, okay coach that can get a team up for one or two big games/season.

Coaches are judged by championships.
When it really comes to results... Spurrier is no better than Stallings or Fulmer. Both won national titles back in the 90s and are now retired. The only difference is Steve has a part time gig at South Carolina.
