Hardly known, but awesome bands from Knoxville back in the day would be The V-Roys, The Judybats and The Everybodyfields. Now, I would say that the most widely known would be The Black Lillies. That being said, my personal favorite is Blue Mother Tupelo.
Nobody knows of them...but they are amazing.

1. Vandy - Notable Musicians: The whole of Country music. As far as Vandy alum, there’s Dierks Bentley and Amy Grant. You would expect being in Nashville the school would have produced others, disappointing.
2. UGA - Notable Musicians: These, I hope, are common knowledge. R.E.M., B-52s, Of Montreal (Actually the entire Elephant 6 Collective), Brantley Gilbert, the list goes on.
3. UF - Notable Musicians: Tom Petty, Sister Hazel, Less Than Jake, Stephen Stills. Again it stacks up evenly with our fair town, but I can’t let the Gators win.
4. USC - Notable Musicians: Amos Lee, Toro y Moi, Crossfade, Hootie and the Blowfish (and in turn, Darius Rucker). I’m sure he thought about coming to Georgia, don’t think he didn’t think about it.
5. Notable Musicians: 10 Years – that one hit wonder that tells my age because I felt like “Wasteland” came out two years ago. Kenny Chesney also hails from Knoxville. You can’t listen to country radio for a hour without hearing this guy sing about country boy things: tractors, beer and what have you.

I partied at his house once. If you're familiar with campus, right across the street from Blind Pig, next to River Mill apartments, there's a big brick building. Way back in teh day I think it was an O'Malleys, later it became Dial America.
Anyways, right at the tail end of my tenure in Athens BG bought the place and lived there. It was weird, the place was massive and it was just him. Anyway I had a buddy from Jefferson where BG is from so one night he invites us over there to chill. There really isn't actually any cool ending to this story. He wasn't famous yet, so we just drank beer and he showed us his guns and played guitar. At the time it was pretty cool just because he was good at guitar. Now that I know his music though it's like meh.

People keep forgetting about Corey Smith.... but most outside the S.E. probably don't know who that is. He got his career started in Athens.

Do not ever talk about Corey Smith again. Holy shite dude. Are you serious?

Overall? REM, and it isn't close.
Jam Band? WSP
Southern music? DBT all day, errday.
Athens is King and you should all kneel in its presence. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are the only band that holds serve.

I won't mention Corey Smith if you don't mention David Barnes.

Yes, along with Lyle Lovett. Two of my favorites.
