The Tiger Athletic Foundation gives back millions to academics every year. It is self-sustaining. Part of the reason it thrives is because it gives athletics a layer of insulation from University funding, exactly for moments like this where it needs to express some autonomy. But our President, who is a true political flamingo, was "concerned about the optics" and thus passed on Jimbo. In short, Louisiana politics trumped all else. It's not and never has been about"being broke", it's about administrators and politicians threatening shutdowns and making draconian pronouncements to leverage their positions.
EDIT- All funds for all buyouts were in place and to be paid by private individuals. No money would have come from the LSU general fund.

You and your family are from LA
Corruption doesn't occur due to stupid citizens. It happens because the smartest citizens lack any sense of morality.

LES MILES CONTRACT DETAILS
Total Annual Certain Compensation: $4.3 million
- $300,000 base salary(this is the only money that actually comes out of LSU's pockets)
- $3.45 million in media payments (radio, TV, and Internet appearances on LSU-sanctioned programs)
- $550,000 in "additional revenue,” including $500,000 for services to TAF, $50,000 from the team’s shoe and equipment provider, and "any income or benefits earned or received” excluding his base salary, benefits, and media payments.
Potential Incentives: $700,000
- Postseason: $500,000 maximum: $100,000 for making the SEC Championship Game, $100,000 for winning it, $100,000 for making a bowl game, $200,000 for making a "BCS-sponsored Post-Season Bowl Game,” and $100,000 for winning the national championship. (That adds up to $600,000, but the two bowl goals are mutually exclusive; i.e, Miles gets $100,000 for making a bowl game OR $200,000 for making a BCS game)
- Academic: $200,000 if LSU achieves one of the following: a 960 team APR, a 75% graduation rate, or a 2.80 team GPA.

And my parents moved out of that state when I was a young boy for a reason. My dad has a story about how he was offered a chance to give a political donation to get my mom out of a massive ticket. That situation convinced him to get a job out of the state.

Without the stupid citizens those smart amoral politicians couldn't keep getting elected.

Their seal even still has "University of Louisiana" in it:

All of your family moved huh? All of them?
But to act as though it's solely on the citizens is short sighted. Politicians lie, cheat and steal. It's hard to decide which one is going to lie, cheat and steal the least.
I won't pretend the LA residents help the situation. But there are a boat load of other factors that play into why LA is so corrupt that would all come before "the stupid citizens". I'm sure you know some of them, but you just can't help but take a jab at your home state any chance you get amirite.

No, LSU is trying to get it's spending priorities straight - academics vs entertainment.

Oh for sure. She is the worst.
The difference is in Texas you only get a couple of politicians like that because they do everything they can to cut up the districts in ways where stupid either gets consolidated (in her case) or spread out (where they can never be a threat). In this way the overall number of stupid politicians elected are underrepresented compared to the stupid people in society.
The few times we get someone stupid that can't be marginalized (say Rick Perry) they are pushed to a governor's position is that great for an ego boost but has little real power. Texas does an amazing job keeping the democratic process from ruining the government.
Meanwhile Louisiana actually practices real democracy (right down to the best runoff system in America) and then is surprised when they get leadership that is always the lowest common denominator.

To be fair, our choices are generally "corrupt A" vs. "corrupt B". I can't remember a single issue from the governor race, I only remember them attacking each other's character.
Oh and Advocate is reporting LSU pretty much had a deal with Jimbo for only slightly more than what he is currently getting at Florida State. I was convinced he turned us down and we crawled back to Miles.

Most of it started when Long was assassinated.
But somehow the citizens are supposed to know that governors will take kickbacks, or "steal our wealth" instead of "share our wealth".
After Long was killed, things went south very quickly and LA has never recovered. It's become a state for the amoral to prey on for numerous reasons.

No, just my nuclear family. All of them did move out of New Orleans proper to get away from Nagin though.

The problem isn't the just the people, it is the system in place that elects the leadership and the expectations of the electorate. Long ran the entire state like Pablo Escobar ran Columbia, and created a monster of wrongful entitlement that is carried into the modern era.
What it would take to get out of that mess is good leadership that resets the expectations (kinda like what Reagan did for the whole US), but the most talented politician the state has had in years was too busy preparing for a failed presidential run to make the right moves for LA residents. I don't see any concrete solutions to the problem.

Sure there is a lot that goes into it, but the expectations and actions of the citizens shows that they probably can't be trusted with the nuances of a Jimbo hire.

I think the corrupt political system in Louisiana deserves every jab every native son has. I would love for the state to go into a full blown prosperity mode and create the kind of economy that I could move back and get another highly technical job with options. There is some movement in that direction, but its regional and being done in spite of state governance and not because of it.
It sucks not having access to beignets.

$30 million to switch coaches with virtually the same record is a little hard to justify

That is fine. Here is a peer reviewed paper that states that Louisiana is the most corrupt state per capita (after DC which isn't a state):
quote:
Although ranking higher than New York and California, Illinois is not the leader
in per capita convictions, it ranks seventh. Coming in first is the District of Columbia,
which with only 602,000 residents has a per capita conviction rate of 16.02 per 10,000
residents. Second is Louisiana, which with 4.5 million residents, has 2 convictions per
10,000 residents.

No.
Louisiana was corrupt WAY before Huey, during Huey, and well after Huey.
Huey takes a lot of heat for being corrupt, but it's only because he finally allowed the corruption to benefit the lower classes instead of just concentrating corrupt profits at the elite top. Huey was the first governor of Louisiana not put up by the political machine in New Orleans - not including Reconstruction.
But no, Louisiana has always been corrupt, even Andrew Jackson realized this when he came down to defend New Orleans in 1814.
