Scholarship limit was very high.

Coach Bryant & Coach Vaught used the numbers well.

The would sign players just to make sure they couldn't play elsewhere.

Therefore, I think it was easier for them than now.

Less competition.

Saban is just not the man that Bryant was. It's not his fault, it just isn't there.

Just because Saban isn't as outgoing I wouldn't say he's not the man CPB was. He sure doesn't drink like he did. CPB was a bigger personality but, imo, that's not what makes you a bigger man. On that front only Saban has him beat already. As much as I love the Bear he had his problems.

Saban has already surpassed Bryant on the field. If he wins 1 or 2 more NC there is no doubt in anyone's mind he is the GOAT.
He isn't the celebrity Bryant was but I don't care about that crap. His on the field accomplishments in this era of football are greater than Bryant.

True story - my dad had a small plane at the Tuscaloosa airport. One day we were in our car coming back from hanger and Bear stumbled out in front of our car drunk and we almost ran over him. He stuck his head in the window and apologized. I was a kid but I will never forget it.

Bear will always be Bear; a living legend who took multiple schools to an SEC title; and became a mega-star coach for his alma mater. Even if Nick some day surpasses the Legend in NC's, he want dull the image of Bear in the minds and hearts of 'Bama fans nor SEC fans for that matter. I will say that it is more difficult to win the SEC and a NC now than it was for Bear. Saban is a legend in his own right; winning NC's at two SEC schools going on for God only knows how long.

Eh, we'll see. This isn't an especially impressive Alabama team. Unfortunately I doubt AU beats them, and I think Saban will have a good shot to win in a playoff even if there isn't much separation between Alabama and other contenders (including MSU).

If you don't think there's more parity when teams go from 130 players to 85, then you just don't get it.

Didn't all teams go from the ability to have 135 players to being regulated to just having 85?

That was 135 A YEAR. I had an older friend that played on an Ears Whitworth team (pre-Bryant). His class had 115 players. That was the size of the freshman class. By the time he was a senior there was only 2 of them playing for Bryan't first team in 58'.

Even later there were a lot more allowed. Steadman Shealy was the 8th QB on the roster his first year. Even though everyone had the same limits a good program like Bama's could take your best prospects and sit them on our bench.
